The Position

We are seeking an experienced Journeyman Exterior Plumber / Underground Pipe Layer to lead and execute deep utility installations. This is a high-responsibility field position for a serious tradesperson who understands exterior wet utilities, plan reading, pipe laser setup, and trench safety.

Primary Responsibilities

Underground Utility Execution & Pipe Laying:

• Sanitary & Water Infrastructure: Install main water lines, service laterals, valves, hydrants, sanitary sewer mains, drop manholes, and force mains.
• Storm Sewer Systems: Set and grade catch basins, manholes, headwalls, subsurface retention systems, and large-diameter storm pipe (RCP, HDPE, PVC).
• Pipe Connections & Joining: Execute proper pipe bedding, joining techniques (gasketed, solvent-weld, mechanical joint, restraint systems), and testing procedures (hydrostatic pressure testing, mandrels, vacuum testing).
• Trenching & Grade Control: Set up and operate pipe lasers, builders levels, and GPS systems to maintain precise invert elevations, pitch, and trench alignments.
• Trench Safety: Oversee proper trench safety protocols, including shoring, trench boxes, sloping, and benching per OSHA standards.

Site & Crew Leadership:

• Direct and assist equipment operators during excavation around existing utilities and bedding placement.
• Guide junior pipe layers and top-men on proper alignment, compaction, and safety practices.
• Review civil blueprints, site plans, and cut sheets to ensure work matches project specifications before digging.

Qualifications

Required:

• 4+ years of verifiable experience in exterior plumbing, underground wet utilities, or heavy civil pipe laying.
• Strong knowledge of utility construction materials (DIP, PVC, C900, RCP, HDPE) and proper joining/bedding methods.
• Proven ability to set up and shoot grade using pipe lasers, auto levels, and optical instruments.
• Thorough understanding of trench safety standards and OSHA excavation guidelines.
• Valid Driver’s License with reliable transportation to job sites.
• Ability to handle the physical demands of deep utility work and heavy material handling.
• Pre-employment background check and drug screening.

Preferred:

• Journeyman Plumbing License or formal trade background.
• Competent Person Certification for Excavations/Trenching & OSHA 10/30.
• Experience reading civil engineering plans, cut sheets, and profile views.
• Proficiency with GPS layout equipment (Topcon / Trimble).
• Class A or B CDL license.
• Equipment operation skills (excavators, loaders, skid steers).
