Junior AI/ML Engineer - Applied Computer Vision
The Role
We’re looking for a motivated Junior AI/ML Engineer to join a growing engineering team working on advanced computer vision and machine learning technologies.
You’ll work with CNNs, Vision Transformers and emerging deep learning architectures, contributing to projects from early experimentation through to production deployment. You’ll learn from experienced engineers and researchers, developing your technical skills while taking on increasing responsibility.
This is a hands-on engineering role where you’ll write code, run experiments, evaluate models and help turn cutting-edge research into reliable software for demanding applications.
What You’ll Do
- Develop and test computer vision algorithms using CNNs, Vision Transformers and other deep learning architectures.
- Run experiments and evaluate model performance, including training strategies, loss functions and evaluation metrics.
- Help translate research into robust, production-ready software.
- Contribute to scalable model training, evaluation and inference pipelines.
- Support model optimisation for accuracy, speed and deployment across edge and cloud platforms.
- Explore emerging AI architectures and contribute to the development of new machine learning solutions.
- Work alongside experienced engineers, researchers and technical leadership on customer projects.
- Take part in technical discussions and develop your understanding of software engineering best practice.
Essential Skills and Experience
- Strong foundations in machine learning and deep learning, gained through a degree, personal projects, internships or professional experience.
- Hands-on experience with PyTorch. TensorFlow experience is also welcome.
- Good understanding of CNNs and Vision Transformers, with an interest in current computer vision research.
- Strong Python programming skills.
- Familiarity with software engineering practices, including version control, testing and code reviews.
- Comfortable working in Linux and/or Windows environments.
- Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Clear communication skills and a willingness to learn, ask questions and collaborate with others.
Desirable Skills
- Experience with object detection, tracking, image segmentation or pose estimation.
- Exposure to aerial, satellite or intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) imagery.
- Interest in edge deployment, real-time AI or GPU optimisation.
- Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, Kubeflow or other MLOps tools.
- Experience with synthetic data or simulation platforms, such as Unreal Engine or NVIDIA Omniverse.
- Experience working alongside researchers.
- An interest in defence, government or national security applications.
Education
An MSc or PhD in Computer Vision, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Robotics or a related discipline would be beneficial. Equivalent practical experience and demonstrable project work are equally welcome.
Security Requirements
Candidates must be eligible to obtain UK security clearance. The ability to achieve Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) clearance is required, with Security Check (SC) clearance or higher desirable.
What’s on Offer?
- The opportunity to work on advanced AI and computer vision technologies.
- Mentoring and technical development from experienced engineers and researchers.
- Exposure to both research-led development and production engineering.
- The chance to contribute to systems used in demanding operational environments.
- Opportunities to develop your skills, take on greater responsibility and progress your career within a highly technical team.
