What they need

Job Summary

Love GIS, technology, and the outdoors? Want a job that takes you places and makes a meaningful impact?

Community Enhancement Strategies (CES) is looking for a Junior Field Technician to join our growing team. This is an entry-level, highly technical role involving survey-grade equipment, GIS, drones, GPS/GNSS and GPR in support of projects across Manitoba and in First Nations communities.

You’ll spend significant time in the field, sometimes in remote locations, and no two projects will look exactly the same. If you’re adventurous, technically curious, detail-oriented, and hungry to learn- we’d love to hear from you!

ABOUT THE ROLE

This is an opportunity to build a career while doing meaningful work with real-world impact. You’ll work throughout Manitoba, including beautiful and remote locations, while building hands-on experience with GIS, drones, GNSS, GPR and other specialized technologies. As CES grows, you’ll have opportunities to develop your skills, take on greater responsibility, and access professional development and training.

This role is a great fit for someone who enjoys being outdoors, is excited by specialized technology, and is equally comfortable getting their hands dirty or processing data in the office. You’ll be part of a small, founder-led team where you can work closely with company leadership and have a real voice in how we work. CES offers health benefits, paid R&R, and a company vehicle for field travel.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

FIELD OPERATIONS & DATA COLLECTION

  • Travel throughout Manitoba to collect, manage, and process field and spatial data, typically on multi-day trips averaging 3–4 days.
  • Operate survey-grade equipment including drones, GPS/GNSS, and GPR instruments.
  • Work in a variety of locations and terrains, including remote or fly-in communities.
  • Complete field-readiness and equipment checklists before and after trips.
  • Occasionally conduct drone or GIS-related training at client sites, depending on experience and ability.

GIS & TECHNICAL OPERATIONS

  • Create, manage, process, and maintain spatial data from sources including LiDAR, orthoimagery, GNSS, and external datasets.
  • Use ArcGIS and related technology to support field data collection and project deliverables.
  • Maintain accurate, organized project data and care for specialized, high-value equipment.
  • Coordinate equipment maintenance and repairs.
  • Support Winnipeg office technology needs when not in the field, including basic troubleshooting, connectivity issues, equipment repairs and maintaining field systems.

TRAVEL & FIELD EXPECTATIONS

  • This is a travel-heavy role- applicants must be genuinely comfortable with that, and capable of driving a company or rental vehicle to field sites throughout Manitoba.
  • During the peak field season, April through November, travel may be required for up to three weeks per month. Most trips are 3–4 days and generally scheduled during the work week, although longer trips and occasional weekends may be required with notice.
  • Project schedules may also result in periods of several consecutive weeks in the Winnipeg office, even during peak season. Flexibility is essential.
  • Travel is distributed collaboratively among field-trained staff, and banked time is provided in accordance with Manitoba employment standards.
  • Independent travel may occasionally be required. We prefer a buddy-system approach whenever practical, but solo field work is sometimes necessary.

WHO WILL THRIVE IN THIS ROLE

This role may be a great fit if you enjoy being outdoors, are excited by specialized technology, and are looking to make a real impact with the work you do. You are meticulous, adaptable, and friendly, with the ability to work independently and make good decisions in unfamiliar environments. You’re curious, practical and eager to keep learning.

This is an early-career opportunity, making it well suited to someone looking to build a strong foundation in GIS, field technology, geospatial data and specialized equipment.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong technical aptitude and willingness to learn.
  • Proficiency with ArcGIS.
  • Strong foundational understanding of GPS, GNSS, and GPR principles.
  • Previous field experience.
  • Valid Manitoba Class 5 driver’s licence (or equivalent) and a safe driving record.
  • Ability and willingness to travel extensively throughout Manitoba, including remote locations and occasional independent travel.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to safely handle, transport and care for specialized technical equipment.
  • Friendly, professional and approachable communication style.
  • Legally eligible to work permanently in Canada.

ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE & ASSETS

  • Advanced RPAS/drone certification or experience with complex drone operations.
  • Experience operating survey-grade drones, GPS/GNSS or GPR equipment.
  • Additional GIS, surveying, environmental or geospatial experience.
  • Experience delivering drone or GIS training.
  • Knowledge or experience working with First Nations communities.
  • Experience working in remote or challenging field environments.

LOCATION & WORKING CONDITIONS

  • The successful candidate will be based in our Winnipeg office and travel throughout Manitoba as project requirements dictate.
  • Applicants must be comfortable with the physical and practical realities of field work and travel.

If you're looking for a conventional office job, this isn’t it. If you want an opportunity to build technical skills, see Manitoba, work with interesting technology, and contribute to meaningful projects - we'd love to meet you.
