Junior Interior Designer

About the role

This is a hands-on design role with a strong focus on residential interior design. You will work across projects from early concept development through to detailed design, material selection and construction, collaborating closely with the development team, architects, consultants, suppliers and contractors. You should think about the home as a whole — how interior spaces connect with gardens, courtyards, decks, entrances and outdoor living areas. You do not need to be a landscape designer, but you should have an interest in landscape and outdoor design, a good design instinct, and an understanding of how indoor and outdoor spaces can complement each other.

Key responsibilities

• Develop interior design concepts for new residential developments.
• Prepare mood boards, material palettes, colour schemes and design presentations.
• Develop interior layouts, spatial planning and design details.
• Select and specify interior finishes, fixtures and materials, including flooring, tiles, cabinetry, benchtops, paint colours, sanitaryware, tapware, lighting and hardware.
• Design and coordinate kitchens, bathrooms, laundries, wardrobes and other key residential spaces.
• Prepare or coordinate interior drawings, schedules and specifications for construction and tendering.
• Review architectural drawings and provide interior design input throughout the design process.
• Work with suppliers and contractors to source materials, obtain samples and review product options.
• Assist with value engineering while maintaining the overall design intent and quality of the project.
• Review samples, shop drawings and material submissions during construction.

About you

• A qualification in Interior Design, Interior Architecture, Spatial Design, Architecture, or a related discipline.
• Approximately 2–3 years of relevant design experience, preferably in residential design.
• Strong residential interior design skills and a good understanding of how homes are built.
• Experience with material, colour, fixture and finish selection.
• Good spatial planning skills and strong attention to detail.
• The ability to prepare clear design presentations, drawings and specifications.
• A strong interest in landscape, outdoor living and the relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces.
• Good communication skills and the ability to work with architects, consultants, suppliers and construction teams.
• Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage several projects and design tasks at the same time.
• A practical and commercially aware approach to design.
