What they need

The Bart Ingredients company has been sourcing and supplying herbs & spices for over 60 years. What began as a husband-and-wife team selling spice racks locally has grown to an organisation with over 200 employees distributing products across the UK. Today the business is privately owned by the Fuchs Gruppe family - the world’s largest privately owned herbs & spices business.

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a Junior Maintenance Engineer to work in our facility in Severn Beach. The main purpose of this role is to support the safe and effective operation, maintenance, and reliability of equipment and systems within a busy food production environment. Working under the guidance of senior engineering colleagues, the role assists in maintaining manufacturing processes, minimising downtime, and ensuring production equipment operates efficiently.

The main responsibilities of this role are:

  • Assist in carrying out planned preventative maintenance on production and operational equipment to support equipment reliability and performance.
  • Support reactive maintenance activities and repairs to help minimise downtime across production lines.
  • Assist with fault finding and basic diagnostics on machinery, using manuals, drawings, and test equipment under the guidance of more experienced engineers.
  • Carry out routine engineering adjustments and maintenance tasks to help maintain equipment performance and operational efficiency.
  • Work collaboratively with production and QA teams to support equipment set-ups, changeovers, and day-to-day operational activities.
  • Support the installation, testing, and commissioning of new equipment, following defined procedures and guidance.
  • Assist in coordinating contractor visits and supporting engineering activities to ensure work is completed safely and effectively.
  • Complete maintenance documentation and provide accurate maintenance records to support engineering and operational reporting.
  • Follow health and safety procedures at all times and report unsafe conditions or practices to protect people, products, and equipment.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and support engineering changes, new product introductions, and procurement-led projects.
  • Support general site maintenance and facilities-related activities.
  • Develop engineering knowledge, skills, and competencies through training, coaching, and practical experience.

Person specification/Qualifications/Capabilities:

  • Level 3 Engineering qualification (Apprenticeship, NVQ, BTEC, City & Guilds, or equivalent) in Mechanical, Electrical, Manufacturing, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Experience gained through an engineering apprenticeship, work placement, technical training programme, or engineering role.
  • Basic understanding of engineering maintenance principles and safe working practices.
  • Competent IT skills and ability to complete maintenance records accurately.
  • Good problem-solving skills and a willingness to learn and develop technical knowledge.
  • Ability to interpret technical documentation, instructions, and engineering drawings with support.
  • Ability to maintain accurate maintenance records and communicate technical information effectively.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical and/or electrical maintenance principles and fault-finding techniques.
  • Experience of working safely and following engineering procedures within a manufacturing, production, or technical environment.
