What they need

PLEASE READ BEFORE APPLYING

This is not an entry-level IT position or a traditional help desk role . Candidates should have at least 3 years of hands-on IT infrastructure experience , including 2+ years participating in infrastructure projects involving technologies such as networking, Windows Server, Microsoft 365, Azure, virtualization and/or infrastructure hardware.

This is also not a remote position . The role is primarily performed at client locations throughout the Dallas–Fort Worth area. Candidates must currently reside in the DFW area or be prepared to relocate before starting.

Job Description - Junior Project Engineer

Mentis Group is looking for an IT professional to join our team of superstars as a Junior Project Engineer. Recognized as a 2026 Dallas Business Journal Best Place to Work , Mentis is looking for a technically talented, detail-oriented and ambitious individual with a strong desire to learn and grow, both technically and as a professional. Team players, only.

As a Managed Service Provider (MSP), Mentis Group supports the IT environments of multiple companies. The environments can vary in terms of size and complexity. As such, the pace and demands maintain a high level… typically much greater than an in-house IT position supporting one company.

Ideal candidates will be well-rounded in their project experience, not just specializing in one area. For example, engineers who have focused solely on networking without meaningful first-hand and direct experience in supporting server virtualization, cloud migrations or Microsoft 365 deployments may find this role outside their wheelhouse. We’re looking for those who bring balanced, hands-on expertise across multiple infrastructure disciplines.

Job Requirements

·    Minimum of 3 years in an infrastructure (not application) IT support role with at least 2 years delivering smaller projects solely or in a “junior” role supporting more senior Project Engineer(s) in larger, more complex projects based on “Working Knowledge” section and “Representative Projects (SMB vs Enterprise)” section.

  • Previous experience "racking and stacking" infrastructure hardware including rack-mount servers, firewalls, switches, etc. Familiarity with trouble-shooting structured cabling is a plus.
  • Highly proficient in building and supporting Windows-based and Mac computers. Familiarity with iOS and Android mobile devices is a plus.
  • Ability and willingness to work entirely from Mentis-office or Client site (across DFW).
  • Ability and willingness to individually lift up to 30lbs as needed.
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S.
  • Current Texas Driver’s License.
  • Well-maintained and insured personal automobile… preferably with a trunk and/or secured space for storage a small amount of hardware, tools, etc.
  • Bachelor’s degree, comparable collegiate and/or trade school experience, or equivalent work experience.

Attributes Required

  • Absolute dedication to a superior client experience and positive attitude.
  • Personable, presentable and confident technical presence with our clients... this is the heart of the role!
  • Incredibly high attention to detail and willingness to adhere to checklists and/or detailed instructions to complete defined work.
  • Innate ability to work autonomously and be flexible... when onsite, the situation can change quickly - a calm and flexible mind-set is imperative!
  • Strong commitment to improving yourself and the team through adherence to process and procedures, as well as fully leveraging available tools.
  • Strong desire to grow your technical skill set… and willingness to recognize when it is necessary to ask for technical expertise from others without unnecessarily burdening other team members.
  • Ability to be self-motivated and self-directed.
  • Articulate in both verbal and written communications, internally and with clients.

Working Knowledge Required

  • Network hardware and technology understanding and experience e.g., TCP\IP, LAN, WAN, VPN, Datacenter, Cloud
  • Firewalls e.g., Meraki, SonicWALL, Cisco ASA, VPN, etc.
  • Switches e.g., VLAN, SNMP, STP, etc.
  • Wireless solutions and implementation/troubleshooting
  • Enterprise Storage Area Network / NAS
  • Windows Server hardware and operating system understanding, administration and deployment
  • Windows Server Hyper-V administration and deployment
  • Microsoft Office 365 administration and deployment
  • Cloud Environment management e.g., AWS, Azure, etc.
  • Workstation operating systems e.g., MAC, Windows 11
  • Workstation productivity / operations application administration e.g., Microsoft Office, QuickBooks, etc.
  • VOIP Phone Systems e.g., RingCentral
  • Conference Room Systems e.g., Logitech
  • Troubleshooting and resolving general IT issues

Representative Projects (SMB vs Enterprise)

  • Implement Network Refresh (firewall, switches, wireless access points, wireless controller, new primary and/or backup ISP service, failover, extend wireless, etc)
  • Implement Subtenant Network (clients wanting to lease out part of their space but provide secure internet - wired and wireless)
  • Implement Server Refresh / Consolidation
  • Migrate server(s) to Hosted Cloud Environment (Azure, AWS)
  • Migrate Active Directory / Google Workspace to Hosted Azure Entra ID
  • Migrate application to Hosted Solution (e.g., QuickBooks, etc)
  • Consolidate / Split Microsoft 365 Tenants (for mergers, acquisitions, divestitures)
  • Implement UPS System - Servers, networks devices, meeting client need for uptime, graceful shut-down/spin-up, alerting, monitoring)
  • Implement VOIP Phone System (e.g., RingCentral)
  • Implement Conference Room Solution (e.g., Logitech)
  • Implement office moves and/or new office setup
  • Stage and prepare computers for manual or automated build
  • Assist with final data migration of built computers and position workstation including computer setup, peripheral setup and cable management
  • Relocate hardware such as workstations, printers, etc.

Job Responsibilities

  • Deliver projects solely or with other project resource(s) based on “Working Knowledge” section above. NOTE: Based on the size and/or type of project, you may fully own the project as “Project Lead” OR be in a junior role working with a more senior Project Engineer (the “Project Lead”).
  • Work with Project Design Desk resource(s) and other Project Engineer(s) to review and validate prospective project scope based on “Working Knowledge” section above as well as knowledge of client-specific infrastructure environment.
  • Provide ad-hoc support and mentoring of more junior technical resources when needed via escalations, assistance, etc.
  • Adhere to Mentis-defined metrics and expectations including DAILY time entry and status reporting. Sample metrics include Billing Utilization, CSAT and EAC (actuals in line with estimates).
  • Create and/or update existing technical documentation during and post-project.
  • Complete “Knowledge Transfer” sessions with non-Projects staff post-project to ensure: the Service Desk team can manage and support the technical implementation; the Technical Alignment team can audit against best practices and standards; and the Centralized Services team can monitor the environment for a superior client experience.
  • Identify opportunities for automation and, if appropriate (based on skills, availability and/or interest), implement said automation via tools such as Powershell scripting, Rewst, ImmyBot, Intune, Zapier, etc.
  • To be determined duties in alignment with seniority and/or working knowledge.

Other Considerations

  • This position is intended to be a full-time position (with standard benefits to be discussed).
  • This position is an exempt role... you will be paid a salary and will not be eligible for overtime pay.
  • This position will report to the Mentis Project Manager (PM) when working on projects and Mentis Service Desk Lead (SDL) when working on escalations and/or tickets requiring onsite activity.
  • Work is expected to be done primarily at client site.
  • A “hoteling” workspace will be available to you at our Dallas office (75 and 635 area) or Ft. Worth office (downtown FTW) if needed.
  • While client site and/or Mentis office will be your primary work locations, there will be times where you may work from your home and/or remote location of your choosing, conducive to a professional and productive work environment e.g., stable power and internet service, no background noise, etc.
  • Mentis does not have minimum onsite requirements... this is driven entirely by the needs of our clients. At times, with sufficient notice, you may be required to attend activities at our main office (in Dallas, TX), a sales prospect site and/or an entertainment location (e.g., TopGolf).
  • Travel time to/from Mentis office and Client site is included in daily hour tracking. Personal home proximity to Mentis primary office (Dallas) may be differentiator... travel to/from home and Mentis office is not included in expense and/or time tracking.
  • Reasonable travel costs will be reimbursed by Mentis on a monthly rate e.g., reimburse mileage per then-current IRS mileage rate, parking and tolls. Mileage and time tracking to/from client/prospect is based on your primary Mentis office being the starting and/or destination point (even if you are starting/ending at your home).
  • Mentis will provide a laptop and may consider peripherals for a remote workspace e.g., monitor, etc.
  • Mentis will supplement $50 per month for mobile device service.
  • Mentis will supplement $50 per month for home internet service.
  • This position is included in the weekly on-call rotation (typically, 1 week per 6-8 weeks). All attempts are made to minimize the burden of on-call by requiring user to clearly communicate on-call need (not just the default), staffing the team with resources in the APAC and EMEA time zones (for evening coverage Sunday thru Thursday, etc.).
  • Upon applying, you may be requested to complete a variety of questionnaires to measure skills, business acumen, personality and capability for growth.
  • Upon extension of offer, you may be requested to complete a background check… employment with Mentis is depended on a “clear” run.
