About the role
We're looking for a Junior Software Engineer who understands how good software systems are built, not just how to write code. You'll help design, build, test and run software for Eebz products and clients, working alongside experienced engineers who will mentor you.
This role puts engineering fundamentals first. You'll work with databases, cloud infrastructure and modern AI-assisted tools such as Claude. We don't expect you to be an expert in any of these yet, but we do expect solid foundations and a strong appetite to learn.
As an individual you'll likely be:
- Curious - keen to understand how systems work and why they're built the way they are
- A problem-solver - able to break a problem down and reason through it logically
- Collaborative - comfortable asking questions, sharing ideas and taking feedback
- Product-minded - interested in the people who use what we build
- Growing into ownership - able to work independently on clearly defined tasks, with support when you need it
Key responsibilities
- Contribute to the design, build, testing and maintenance of software features, with guidance from senior engineers
- Work with databases: writing queries and helping to investigate data issues
- Learn how we deploy and run services on cloud platforms (Azure), and help with this under supervision
- Use AI-assisted development tools, including Claude, to explore problems, generate and review code, write tests and produce documentation, while checking outputs critically
- Troubleshoot and debug issues across applications, data and infrastructure
- Write clear technical documentation and keep it up to date
- Take part in code reviews, stand-ups, planning and estimation sessions
- Learn and apply good engineering practice: version control, testing, security basics and maintainable design
Essential skills
We're looking for a basic understanding of each area below, from study, personal projects or self-learning. We'll train you in the rest.
Engineering principles
- Awareness of the software development lifecycle and Agile ways of working
- Awareness of core concepts such as modularity, abstraction and code reuse
- Understanding of why software needs testing
- A general idea of how applications fit together, e.g. what an API is and how a client talks to a server
- Some familiarity with version control, ideally Git
Databases
- Understanding of relational database concepts: tables, keys and relationships
- Ability to write simple SQL queries (e.g. selecting and filtering data)
- Awareness that non-relational (NoSQL) databases exist
Cloud and infrastructure
- Understanding of what cloud computing is and its basic building blocks (compute, storage, networking)
- Interest in a major platform such as Azure, Google Cloud or AWS (hands-on use is a bonus)
- A general idea of what containers (e.g. Docker) are
General
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Clear written and verbal communication
- Attention to detail and a willingness to learn quickly in a team
Desirable skills
None of these are required, but they'll help your application stand out.
- Experience developing with Claude - for example using Claude Code, the Claude API or Claude-based agents to build, debug or document software, and an understanding of how to prompt effectively and review AI-generated output
- Coding experience in at least one language (e.g. Elixir, Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, Java or C#)
- Some exposure to frontend development, ideally JavaScript with a framework such as Vue.js
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines (e.g. GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps)
- Any exposure to Kubernetes or infrastructure as code (e.g. Terraform)
- An entry-level cloud certification, such as Microsoft Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900), AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner or Google Cloud Digital Leader
- A portfolio, GitHub profile or personal projects you can talk us through
Qualifications and experience
- A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related subject, or equivalent experience through an apprenticeship, bootcamp, certification or self-directed learning
- No professional experience required: we're interested in what you've learned through study, an apprenticeship, a placement or personal projects
- Right to work in the UK
What we offer
- Salary of £26,000–£28,000, depending on experience
- Pension scheme with 5% company contribution
- 25 days' holiday (Plus UK Bank Holidays)
- Private medical insurance
- Mentoring from experienced engineers and a clear path to mid-level roles
- Time and support for learning, including access to AI development tools such as Claude
Pay: £26,000.00-£28,000.00 per year
Application question(s):
- This role is hybrid, with three days a week in the office. Does that suit you
- Would the commute to our Windsor office be manageable for you?
Work Location: Hybrid remote in Windsor (Berkshire, South East Region, England)
