Junior Sous Chef

About the role

Journal Café in Ormiston is looking for a reliable and experienced Junior Sous Chef to join our busy kitchen team. We are a well-established café serving brunch, lunch, cabinet food and modern café-style dishes. This role would suit someone with solid commercial kitchen experience who is ready to take the next step in their career.

Key responsibilities

• Preparing and cooking brunch and café-style dishes
• Assisting the Head Chef and Sous Chef with daily kitchen operations
• Food preparation, plating and service
• Helping with cabinet food and daily specials
• Maintaining food quality, portion control and presentation
• Supporting and guiding junior kitchen staff
• Assisting with stock control and reducing food waste
• Keeping the kitchen clean and organised
• Following food safety and hygiene requirements
• Helping the kitchen run smoothly during busy service periods

About you

• At least 2 years' commercial kitchen experience
• Café or restaurant experience preferred
• Good breakfast and brunch cooking skills
• Able to work efficiently under pressure
• Reliable, punctual and well organised
• Good communication and teamwork skills
• Available to work weekends and public holidays when required
• Experience as a Chef de Partie or Junior Sous Chef would be an advantage
• Legal right to work in New Zealand
