What they need

The Precast Junior Structural Engineer supports the engineering team in carrying out structural calculations, modeling, and detail engineering for precast and prestressed concrete elements (hollow-core slabs, solid slabs, beams, columns, wall panels, and staircases). This entry-to-intermediate role focuses on learning factory manufacturing constraints and learning to design components for both final structural performance and temporary handling forces (demolding, transport, and site erection). Working under the supervision of a Senior Structural Engineer, this position bridges structural design concepts with production shop drawings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Structural Modeling & Calculations

    • Assist in performing preliminary structural calculations for standard precast concrete members under supervision.
    • Run structural software models to determine bending moments, shear forces, deflection limits, and strand layouts for precast elements.
    • Perform basic connection design calculations, including weld plates, anchor bolts, corbels, and grouted sleeve connections.
  • Drafting & Detailing Support

    • Review preliminary shop drawings, bar bending schedules (BBS), and strand pattern drawings generated by detailers for accuracy.
    • Assist in modeling precast components, cast-in plates, lifting anchors, and MEP blockouts in Tekla Structures or AutoCAD.
    • Help compile structural calculation packages and technical submittal files for consultant review.
  • Factory & Production Coordination

    • Check production drawings against factory bed layouts and mold capabilities to identify potential casting issues.
    • Perform quality checks on reinforcement cages, strand tensioning setups, and embedded hardware prior to concrete placement.
    • Document non-conformances and assist senior engineers in drafting standard factory repair details for minor damages.
  • Site & Handling Assistance

    • Assist in calculating basic lifting loop capacities, stripping stresses, and pitch angles for safe factory handling.
    • Cross-check architectural and structural drawings to identify dimensions, interfaces, and site tolerance issues early.

Desired Candidate Profile

Required Qualifications & Skills:

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering. EIT (Engineer-in-Training) or FE certification is a plus.

Experience: Min. 3 years of structural engineering experience; prior internship or coursework exposure to reinforced/prestressed concrete and precast manufacturing is highly preferred.

Software Skills: Basic-to-intermediate proficiency in AutoCAD, Tekla Structures, ETABS, SAFE, or Concise Beam; strong skills in MS Excel for engineering calculations.

Technical Knowledge: Foundational knowledge of reinforced concrete design (ACI 318 or Eurocode 2), mechanics of materials, statics, and basic prestressed/pre-tensioning principles.
