What they need
Position Overview
The Boys & Girls Club is seeking a dedicated, nurturing, and enthusiastic Kindergarten Teacher to support the academic development of kindergarten-aged members through a structured, engaging, and developmentally appropriate instructional program.
Kindergarten is a critical year in a child's educational journey, establishing the foundation for future academic success. Strengthening early literacy and mathematical skills during this stage prepares students for independent reading, writing, and problem-solving as they progress through school.
The Kindergarten Teacher will design and implement targeted learning experiences that build foundational academic skills, encourage curiosity, and foster confidence in young learners. The program will emphasize consistency, repetition, and hands-on learning to help students develop the essential skills needed for continued academic growth.
Program Focus Areas
The instructor will develop lessons and activities that target the following foundational skills:
Early Literacy and Language Development
- Recognition of uppercase and lowercase letters.
- Letter-sound recognition and association.
- Phonemic and phonological awareness.
- Early phonics and decoding skills.
- Vocabulary development and oral language skills.
- Early reading comprehension through read-alouds and guided discussion.
Early Mathematics
- Recognition and formation of numbers.
- Counting and one-to-one correspondence.
- Basic number sense and understanding of quantities.
- Early mathematical reasoning and problem-solving.
Fine-Motor and Pre-Writing Skills
- Development of fine-motor skills necessary for writing.
- Proper formation of letters and numbers.
- Activities that strengthen hand control, coordination, and writing readiness.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and implement a structured curriculum aligned with kindergarten-level foundational literacy and mathematics skills.
- Plan engaging lessons that provide consistent, targeted practice based on students' individual learning needs.
- Incorporate developmentally appropriate teaching strategies, including songs, movement, manipulatives, educational games, read-alouds, learning centers, and small-group instruction.
- Create a supportive and interactive learning environment that encourages participation, exploration, and confidence.
- Reinforce foundational academic skills through repetition and meaningful practice.
- Monitor student progress and adjust instruction to address areas of strength and opportunities for improvement.
- Conduct pre-program, mid-program, and post-program assessments to measure student growth and evaluate the effectiveness of instruction.
- Maintain appropriate records of student progress and use assessment results to guide instructional planning.
- Collaborate with Boys & Girls Club staff to support program goals and ensure consistent, high-quality learning experiences.
- Ensure all lessons and activities are age-appropriate, inclusive, and responsive to students' developmental needs.
Instructional Approach
The program will prioritize consistency and repeated exposure to foundational academic concepts. Young children benefit from frequent opportunities to practice new skills in different contexts before they can apply them independently and confidently.
The instructor will use a balance of direct instruction, hands-on activities, guided practice, and interactive learning experiences to reinforce key concepts. Lessons will be designed to keep students engaged while providing the repetition necessary to strengthen early literacy, numeracy, and fine-motor development.
To measure program effectiveness, the instructor will administer assessments at the beginning, midpoint, and conclusion of the 36-week program. Assessment results will help identify student growth, guide instructional adjustments, and inform future program planning.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, ELA, English, Math, or a related field required.
- Valid teaching certification required
- Experience teaching or working with kindergarten-aged children preferred.
- Knowledge of early childhood education, foundational literacy, and early mathematics.
