Kitchen Assistant/Dishwasher

Job Description—Assistant Cook Specific
Purpose: To assist the lead cook in providing healthy meals and snacks for the students at Refuge Early Learning Center, and in maintaining a clean and sanitary kitchen.

This position is flexible in hours, but generally we are looking for someone who is able to assist in the kitchen from 10a-5p Monday-Fridays.

Responsibilities

Assists lead cook in preparing snacks and lunches for the day/week.

Have knowledge and understanding of food safety and is willing to keep up training as needed.

Washing dishes in commercial dishwasher after morning snack, lunch, and afternoon snack.

Assist lead cook in stocking the kitchen, alerting him/her to items that are running out, keeping things in FIFO (first in, first out), labeling items appropriately, etc.

Assists lead cook in avoiding children’s’ allergies and making sure food going to the classroom is correct.

Encourages healthy relationships between children and food, and healthy habits.

Kitchen Environment

Helps to maintain an orderly and sanitary kitchen.

Assists with deep cleaning, such as defrosting the freezer, cleaning stoves, etc., on teacher workdays or when needed.

Personal and Interpersonal

Helps build a supportive, caring team. Flexible in schedule, responsible, helpful, and kind to co-workers.

Demonstrate self-motivation and desire to continue learning to increase knowledge and skills by attending staff meetings, workshops, and conferences, and read publications related to cooking, food safety, healthy habits in Early Childhood, etc.

Demonstrate a genuine love for children, respect children as individuals.

Show love as you maintain good working relationships with staff members and families.

Follow the ECM’s guidelines as set forth in the staff handbook, parent handbook, parent newsletters, bulletin boards and any other ECM materials.

Demonstrate professionalism in dress, attitude, timeliness and reliability, and confidentiality (including avoiding gossip).

Education/Experience Requirements

Ability to relate joyfully and sensitively to young children

Evidence of security and judgment to handle crisis situations

Be certified or willing to become certified in First Aid and CPR

Prior to employment, assistant cook shall submit a dated report of satisfactory TB test, as required by NC licensing rules and regulations.

Present a dated medical statement signed by a licensed physician, a licensed nurse practitioner or a licensed physician’s assistant verifying that s/he is physically and mentally able to work with children. This statement shall be dated not more than six months prior to employment or within 30 days after date of employment.

Prior to official employment, all employees must present a background check from the Division of Child Development and Early Education showing that they are “Qualified.”'

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $14.50 - $17.00 per hour
