Job Summary
The Laboratory and Quality Control Manager holds combined ownership of the metrology/calibration laboratory and the broader quality control function across both Phillips Screw Company (PSC) and Wrentham Tool Group (WTG). This role is responsible for maintaining the laboratory's ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation and A2LA standing, ensuring the accuracy, traceability, and integrity of all measurement, calibration, and gaging data used to verify product and tooling conformance, while also owning day-to-day quality control processes, SOPs, and the ISO 9001 quality management system across both business units. The Laboratory and Quality Control Manager is the single point of accountability connecting lab-generated measurement data to PSC and WTG's quality decisions, and champions a culture of measurement rigor, quality discipline, and continuous improvement across both sites.
Responsibilities and Duties
Own and manage quality control systems, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and processes across both PSC and WTG to ensure consistent product quality and full compliance with ISO 9001 and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.
Own and maintain the calibration/metrology laboratory's quality management system in full compliance with ISO/IEC 17025, serving as the primary technical point of contact for A2LA accreditation, annual A2LA lab audits, surveillance visits, and recertification cycles.
Perform internal audits of the QMS and manufacturing processes at both PSC and WTG to identify non-compliance and implement corrective actions.
Plan, schedule, and perform calibration and verification of laboratory and production measurement equipment across both sites, ensuring all equipment remains within calibration and is fully traceable to national/international standards (e.g., NIST).
Maintain and control the laboratory's measurement uncertainty budgets, calibration procedures, and equipment master records.
Operate and maintain precision measurement equipment such as Starrett HDV 300, Pratt & Whitney super-micrometers, optical comparators, and other linear/dimensional measurement systems.
Collect, analyze, and report on quality and laboratory data, measurement system analysis (MSA/Gage R&R), and key performance metrics across PSC and WTG to identify improvement opportunities and support strategic decision-making.
Investigate out-of-tolerance conditions and measurement discrepancies; lead root-cause analysis and corrective/preventive action (CAPA) for laboratory- and production-related nonconformances.
Lead and engage customers to gather product feedback and investigate customer complaints, driving internal improvements across both business units.
Develop and execute quality improvement initiatives using structured problem-solving methodologies, fostering a culture of continuous improvement across PSC and WTG.
Develop, document, and maintain laboratory and quality control SOPs, work instructions, and training records; train and mentor lab and quality technicians on calibration methods and quality standards.
Develop quality metrics based on corporate objectives, spanning both PSC and WTG, and post them for review across the organization.
Manage relationships with external calibration vendors, accreditation bodies, and auditing agencies.
Qualifications
7-10 years of combined quality control and calibration/metrology laboratory experience in a manufacturing environment required.
Direct experience with ISO/IEC 17025 laboratory accreditation requirements and ISO 9001 quality management systems; A2LA audit experience strongly preferred.
Bachelor's Degree in a technical field is a plus, but not required
Ability to analyze complex data, identify patterns and implement effective solutions to quality issues
High level of conscientiousness and meticulous attention to detail to ensure high standards are met and maintained.
Experience leading and mentoring lab and quality technicians, and collaborating cross-functionally with manufacturing, engineering, and quality teams across multiple sites.
Knowledge of quality management software, analytical tools and core quality management principles
Knowledge of manufacturing processes, fabrication methods and tool design is a plus
Strong verbal and written communications skills
Strong understanding of Lean manufacturing principles, with demonstrated ability to lead targeted improvement events and champion quality focused continuous improvement initiatives, is preferred.
Strong linear measurement experience. Familiarity with measurement equipment like Starett HDV 300, Pratt & Whitney Super-micrometer and Optical Comparators
