Job Overview

Mitten Talent Solutions is seeking a Laboratory Director of Molecular Pathology and Cytogenetics to lead specialized clinical laboratory operations within a large, academic-affiliated healthcare environment in Detroit, MI. This full-time leadership role oversees complex molecular diagnostics, quality assurance, regulatory compliance, and technology implementation while holding an academic faculty appointment to support resident and fellow education.

Duties

• Direct technical and operational workflows for Molecular Genetics and Cytogenetics laboratories, ensuring diagnostic accuracy and testing efficiency.
• Provide high-level technical oversight for advanced diagnostic methodologies, including next-generation sequencing (NGS), RT-PCR, Sanger sequencing, microarrays, FISH, and karyotyping.
• Maintain rigorous quality control and quality assurance standards to guarantee compliance with CLIA and CAP regulatory requirements.
• Collaborate with medical directors, pathologists, genetic counselors, and administrative leaders to establish laboratory policies, optimize workflows, and drive assay development.
• Oversee laboratory information systems (LIS), technical documentation, proficiency testing, and performance improvement initiatives.
• Support staff leadership, workflow coordination, technical training, and academic teaching activities for residents and fellows.

Required Experience

• Required: PhD in Genetics, Molecular Biology, Cancer Biology, or a closely related life science discipline.
• Required: Board certification or active candidacy with the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG) in Laboratory Genetics & Genomics, Clinical Cytogenetics & Genomics, or Clinical Molecular Genetics & Genomics.
• Required: In-depth knowledge of CLIA and CAP laboratory regulations, quality management systems, and clinical compliance standards.
• Demonstrated technical expertise in molecular pathology and cytogenetics methodologies (NGS, FISH, PCR, microarray, karyotyping).
• Strong analytical, communication, and leadership capabilities; candidates meeting ABMGG qualifications with limited formal management experience are encouraged to apply.
• Preferred: Experience in assay development, clinical education, research, or laboratory quality improvement within an academic medical setting.

Pay: $122,000.00 - $172,000.00 per year
