4. Job Purpose

To conduct chemical, metallurgical, sand and mechanical testing of foundry materials and castings, ensure compliance with customer and internal specifications, and support the foundry in maintaining consistent casting quality.

5. Key Responsibilities

• Conduct chemical analysis of molten metal, raw materials and finished castings.
• Operate and maintain spectrometer, hardness tester, microscope and other laboratory equipment.
• Perform sand testing such as:
• Moisture
• Permeability
• Compactability
• Green compression strength
• AFS/GFN
• Clay and other relevant parameters.
• Conduct metallurgical examination of castings, including microstructure, graphite morphology, nodularity and matrix structure.
• Perform hardness testing and other mechanical tests as required.
• Check and verify incoming raw materials such as scrap, ferro alloys, inoculants and additives.
• Maintain laboratory testing records, reports and test certificates.
• Ensure calibration and periodic verification of laboratory instruments.
• Prepare daily, shift-wise and monthly laboratory reports.
• Provide timely test results to Melting, Moulding, Core Shop and Quality departments.
• Monitor chemical composition against specified grades and customer requirements.
• Support investigation of casting defects through chemical and metallurgical analysis.
• Maintain laboratory housekeeping, 5S and safety standards.
• Follow applicable quality procedures, work instructions and safety requirements.
• Support internal, customer and third-party quality audits.
• Maintain traceability of samples and test results.
• Train laboratory operators/technicians in testing procedures and equipment operation.

7. Qualification

B.E./B.Tech./Diploma in:

• Metallurgy
• Materials Engineering
• Mechanical Engineering
• Foundry Technology

8. Experience

3–8 years of relevant experience in a foundry laboratory, metallurgical laboratory or casting industry.

Experience in spectrometer operation, sand testing, metallography and hardness testing is preferred.

9. Required Skills

• Good knowledge of foundry metallurgy
• Knowledge of ferrous/non-ferrous casting grades
• Spectrometer operation and chemical analysis
• Sand testing and control
• Metallographic sample preparation and analysis
• Knowledge of casting defects and root-cause analysis
• Laboratory equipment calibration
• ISO 9001 / IATF 16949 awareness
• Good documentation and reporting skills
• Computer knowledge, especially MS Excel

10. Authority

The Laboratory Engineer shall have authority to:

• Hold or report non-conforming material/castings based on laboratory results.
• Recommend correction of chemical composition or process parameters.
• Stop or escalate testing when equipment is not calibrated or results are unreliable.
• Communicate quality deviations to the concerned department and Quality Head.
