Laboratory Technician

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

1. Prepares and organizes laboratory materials, equipment, and supplies needed for lectures, demonstrations, laboratory activities, practical examinations, and skills assessments.
2. Sets up and checks respiratory therapy laboratory equipment and simulation materials prior to laboratory classes, including ventilators, oxygen delivery devices, airway management equipment, suction devices, nebulizers, resuscitation equipment, and other related apparatus.
3. Performs routine inspection, preventive maintenance, cleaning, and proper storage of laboratory equipment and ensures that equipment is in safe and functional condition.
4. Prepares, maintains, and organizes laboratory specimens, models, mannequins, simulation materials, demonstration devices, and other instructional resources used in Respiratory Therapy laboratory classes.
5. Maintains an updated monthly inventory of laboratory equipment, supplies, consumables, and other instructional materials and monitors stock levels to ensure availability for scheduled classes and examinations.
6. Prepares and processes requisitions for laboratory supplies, equipment, consumables, and other materials required by the School of Respiratory Therapy.
7. Receives, checks, labels, records, and properly stores delivered laboratory supplies and equipment, including preparation of receiving reports and related documentation.
8. Assists faculty members during laboratory classes, demonstrations, practical examinations, return demonstrations, and other academic activities by preparing and providing the necessary equipment and materials.
9. Ensures that respiratory therapy laboratory equipment, work areas, and instructional materials are properly cleaned, disinfected, maintained, and stored in accordance with applicable laboratory safety and infection prevention protocols.
10. Maintains proper documentation and records of equipment use, preventive maintenance, repairs, calibration, inventory, and other laboratory-related activities.
11. Coordinates with the appropriate offices, suppliers, service providers, and/or authorized technicians regarding equipment maintenance, repair, calibration, and replacement, as necessary.
12. Ensures that laboratory activities are conducted in accordance with institutional policies, health and safety standards, and applicable requirements for Respiratory Therapy education and laboratory operations.
13. Reports defective, damaged, missing, or unsafe equipment and supplies to the appropriate faculty member or department head and assists in facilitating appropriate corrective action.
14. Assists in the preparation and organization of laboratory facilities for accreditation visits, inspections, practical examinations, institutional activities, and other academic requirements.
15. Performs other related duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Chairperson and faculty members of the School of Respiratory Therapy.

Job Specifications

1. Must be a college graduate, preferably in Respiratory Therapy, Medical Technology, Biology, Allied Health Sciences, or other related programs.
2. Preferably with at least 6 months to 1 year of relevant experience in a laboratory, healthcare, academic, clinical simulation, or educational setting.
3. Familiarity with respiratory therapy equipment, laboratory procedures, simulation equipment, and basic equipment maintenance is an advantage.
4. Knowledge of basic laboratory safety, infection prevention and control, proper handling of equipment, and inventory management is preferred.
5. Must be self-motivated, organized, goal-oriented, and able to work effectively with minimal supervision.
6. Must be trustworthy, responsible, detail-oriented, and committed to maintaining the proper care, security, and functionality of laboratory equipment and materials.
7. Must possess good communication and interpersonal skills and be able to work professionally with faculty members, students, staff, suppliers, and other stakeholders.
8. Must be able to multitask, prioritize laboratory requirements, and work effectively under time-sensitive conditions, particularly during practical examinations and laboratory activities.
9. Must be willing to learn and adapt to new respiratory therapy equipment, laboratory procedures, technologies, and instructional requirements.
