What they need

The Company

Bakels Edible Oils specialises in manufacturing plant and animal-based oils and fats, that are the value-adding ingredients behind some of some of New Zealand’s most iconic brands. Deeply rooted in our DNA is our strong family culture and our desire to formulate the best place to work for our people. We’re in this for good. One team, all together for a better world. Bringing the right talent into our team, that align with our core values (Integrity, Respect and Dedication) is vital to our success.

So, if you value the same things, why not join us?

The Role

If you enjoy working with data, testing and getting into the details, this could be the role for you. As a Laboratory Technician, you’ll be part of our Technical Team, carrying out analytical testing that plays an important role in ensuring the quality and compliance of our raw materials, in-process samples and finished products. You’ll work closely with the Food Safety & Quality Team and Production Teams, with a strong focus on accuracy, safety and maintaining high laboratory standards.

Reporting to the Laboratory Manager, this is a full-time position, working 40 hours per week on a roster, as well as rostered on-call responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct routine testing and analysis of raw materials, in-process, and finished products using established methods.
  • Follow all SOPs and safety protocols to ensure consistent and compliant laboratory practices.
  • Record and maintain accurate lab data in accordance with Good Documentation Practices (GDP).
  • Calibrate and maintain lab equipment to ensure reliable test results.
  • Report deviations, non-conformances, or equipment issues to senior lab staff.
  • Prepare reagents and consumables to support daily testing operations.
  • Assist in audits, investigations, and method verifications as needed.

What You’ll Bring:

  • Qualifications or experience in food science, lab work, or technical fields.
  • Background in science (desirable but not essential).
  • Prior experience in a commercial or manufacturing lab environment.
  • Knowledge of lab instrumentation, including GC, LC, MS, and NIR (preferred but not essential).
  • Competent with Microsoft Office; experience with ERP systems such as D365 FinOps is a plus.
  • Strong attention to detail, good communication skills, and a proactive, team-oriented mindset.

We’re all about looking after our people. With subsidised health insurance to keep you feeling good, a company superannuation scheme to help plan for the future, a free product each month (yes, really!), and a wellbeing program to keep things in balance—working with us comes with some pretty great perks. Because a great job should come with great benefits, too.

Sound like a bit of you? Hit apply and let’s get started.

Applications close on 2 October 2026. We will be reviewing applications as they are received and may progress with suitable applicants prior to the application closing date.
