Laser Cutting Machine Operator

We are seeking an experienced Laser Cutting Machine Operator to join our fabrication team. In this role, you will be responsible for setting up, loading, and operating CNC laser cutting machinery (fiber/CO2) to process sheet metal and plate according to exact customer and engineering specifications.

The ideal candidate has strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and a proven track record maintaining part quality and tight tolerances.

Key Responsibilities

• Set up, program parameters (speeds, feeds, gas pressures), and operate CNC laser cutting machinery safely and efficiently.
• Load raw sheet metal onto machine beds (manually or via overhead crane/sheet lifter) and unload cut parts.
• Interpret blueprints, CAD drawings, cut lists, and nesting layouts.
• Select, inspect, and adjust laser nozzles, lenses, focus positions, and assist gases (Oxygen, Nitrogen, Air) based on material type and thickness.
• Perform first-piece and in-process quality inspections using calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and pin gauges to maintain tight tolerances.
• Identify and correct cutting defects (burrs, dross, beam misalignment, incomplete cuts) during production runs.
• Conduct daily preventative machine maintenance (lens cleaning, nozzle condition checks, bed cleaning, and slag removal).

Qualifications & Requirements

• Experience: 2+ years of hands-on experience operating industrial CNC laser cutting equipment (Fiber or CO2).
• Blueprint Reading: Strong ability to read engineering drawings, flat patterns, and shop schematics.
• Material Knowledge: Experience working with mild steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and brass/copper.
• Measurement: Proficiency using precision measuring tools to check dimensions, edge squareness, and hole locations.
• Physical Requirements: Ability to stand for long periods, perform repetitive lifting, and safely move heavy sheet metal.
• Education: High School Diploma or GED; vocational training or CNC machine certificates are a plus.
