Laser Design Engineer

We're not looking for researchers who can create beautiful simulations, but rather engineers who can understand physical phenomena and derive the correct answer from a sea of messy, mass-produced data.

The following are some of the tasks related to the development of optical semiconductor devices, which are essential for AI and machine learning. At our client, we are responsible for everything from the development to the mass production of next-generation products several years in the future. One of the rewards of this job is being able to see the products you designed and developed go into mass production and then continue to evolve into successor products.

• Design (performance and cost calculations, etc.) and development (prototyping using factory lines) of high-speed optical elements (DFB lasers) for optical communication applications.
• Evaluation (electrical and optical properties)
• Mass production management of current products (monitoring the quality of manufactured goods, addressing malfunctions in the mass production site, and handling product defects)
• Data analysis, calculation, and simulation
• Creating technical documents (in English; in Japanese), and participating in and discussing meetings.

Business details

• The semiconductors used in the development of semiconductor optical devices for optical communications are InP substrate-based. Unlike silicon-based semiconductors, they are very brittle, and there is an urgent need to automate the production process.
• This position requires a thorough understanding of everything from the operating principles of the devices to the mass production process and evaluation techniques.
• Prototype evaluation is primarily done using the mass production line and by requesting work instructions, but some work will be done independently in clean rooms, etc.
• Managing mass-produced products includes data management and analysis such as sampling inspections, and troubleshooting at customer sites, so smooth communication skills with the mass production site, mass production planning department, and marketing department are required.
• Almost all customers are overseas, and sales are external.

Required Experience And Skills

• Expertise in compound semiconductors such as InP-based materials and semiconductor properties.
• Development or mass production support for new devices such as semiconductor lasers and modulators.
• Demonstrating leadership in driving development and projects
• Yield improvement and cost reduction
• Component design and manufacturing, chip evaluation, data analysis, and technical report creation.
• Providing technical support to customers and explaining technical results.
• Logical thinking and logical explanation skills
• Flexible interpersonal skills and communication skills
• Creating technical documents and conducting discussions in English.

Desired Experience And Skills Knowledge and experience in improving the characteristics and yield of semiconductor devices.

• Knowledge of semiconductor device reliability and experience in failure analysis
• Knowledge and experience of semiconductor device processes
• Knowledge and experience in high-frequency and thermal simulations of semiconductor lasers and modulators
• Improving work efficiency and analyzing large amounts of data through the use of Python and Excel VBA
