Lathe Machine Operator – Job Description

The Lathe Machine Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and maintaining lathe machines to manufacture, repair, and modify metal components according to engineering drawings, specifications, and required dimensions. The role ensures accuracy, product quality, safe machine operation, and timely completion of assigned machining work.

Key Responsibilities

• Set up and operate conventional lathe machines safely and efficiently.
• Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications.
• Machine components according to specified dimensions, tolerances, and surface finishes.
• Perform turning, facing, threading, drilling, boring, grooving, and related machining operations.
• Select and install appropriate cutting tools, fixtures, and machine settings.
• Measure finished components using vernier calipers, micrometers, gauges, and other precision measuring instruments.
• Inspect machined parts to ensure compliance with drawings and quality requirements.
• Adjust machine speed, feed rate, and cutting depth according to material and job requirements.
• Identify machining defects and perform necessary corrections.
• Perform basic maintenance, cleaning, and lubrication of lathe machines.
• Monitor machine condition and immediately report faults or abnormal operation.
• Maintain cutting tools and replace worn or damaged tools when required.
• Handle raw materials and finished components carefully to prevent damage.
• Follow production schedules and complete assigned jobs within the required time.
• Minimize material waste and ensure efficient use of tools and consumables.
• Maintain accurate records of completed machining work when required.
• Keep the machine and surrounding work area clean and organized.
• Follow all workshop safety procedures and use required PPE.
• Comply with company HSE, quality, and operational procedures.
• Coordinate with supervisors, engineers, welders, fitters, and other workshop personnel as required.
