Role Overview
We are seeking a Lead AWS Cloud & Data Architect to take end-to-end technical ownership of the AWS cloud, database, and data platform architecture and implementation .
This is a hands-on lead architect / builder role , not a purely advisory architecture position. The individual will be responsible for designing and directly contributing to the development of AWS-based databases, data models, ingestion pipelines, cloud infrastructure, security, automation, and production-ready data services.
The architect will serve as the technical lead for the AWS data platform , working closely with application developers, data engineers, DevOps engineers, security teams, and client stakeholders. The role requires someone capable of moving seamlessly from architecture and design discussions to hands-on implementation, troubleshooting, code reviews, and deployment.
Key Responsibilities
AWS Data & Database Architecture
- Own the end-to-end architecture and development of the AWS database and data platform .
- Design and implement scalable, secure, highly available AWS-native database solutions.
- Lead database design, schema development, data modeling, indexing, partitioning, and performance optimization .
- Design relational and analytical data structures based on application, reporting, and analytics requirements.
- Define database standards, naming conventions, data access patterns, archival strategies, and lifecycle management.
- Design and implement database backup, restore, high availability, and disaster recovery strategies.
- Troubleshoot database performance, connectivity, data integrity, and scalability issues.
- Provide hands-on technical leadership to developers and data engineers working on the database layer.
AWS Cloud Architecture & Engineering
Design and implement AWS-native architectures using services including:
- Amazon S3 – Data storage, data lake architecture, lifecycle management, encryption, and access controls
- Amazon RDS / Aurora – Relational database architecture, implementation, administration, and optimization
- Amazon Redshift – Data warehouse architecture and performance optimization where applicable
- AWS Glue – ETL development, Glue Jobs, Crawlers, Data Catalog, and data integration
- AWS Lambda – Event-driven processing and serverless orchestration
- Amazon API Gateway – Secure API integration
- AWS Step Functions – Workflow orchestration where applicable
- Amazon MWAA / Apache Airflow – Data pipeline orchestration and scheduling
- AWS DMS (Database Migration Service) – Database migration and replication
- AWS DataSync – Data movement and migration
- AWS Transfer Family – Secure SFTP/FTP-based data exchange
- AWS IAM – Roles, policies, least-privilege access, and service-level security
- AWS Secrets Manager / Parameter Store – Secure credential and configuration management
- Amazon CloudWatch / CloudTrail – Monitoring, logging, alerting, and auditing
- Amazon VPC – Networking, security groups, private endpoints, and secure connectivity
Data Engineering & Integration
- Architect and develop production-grade ETL/ELT pipelines on AWS .
- Design ingestion patterns for batch, file-based, API, and database sources.
- Build transformation, validation, reconciliation, and data quality frameworks.
- Develop AWS Glue/Python/SQL-based data processing solutions.
- Design reusable and metadata-driven data pipelines where appropriate.
- Implement error handling, logging, retry mechanisms, monitoring, and operational controls.
- Ensure data pipelines are scalable, maintainable, observable, and production-ready.
Database & Data Modeling
- Lead logical and physical data modeling .
- Translate business and application requirements into scalable database schemas.
- Design normalized and dimensional models based on transactional and analytical requirements.
- Develop complex SQL queries, stored procedures, views, and database objects.
- Establish primary/foreign key strategies, indexing, partitioning, and data integrity controls.
- Perform SQL/database performance tuning and query optimization.
- Review database designs and SQL developed by engineering teams.
AWS Infrastructure, Security & Automation
- Design secure AWS environments aligned with enterprise security standards.
- Implement IAM roles and policies following least-privilege principles .
- Ensure encryption of data at rest and in transit using AWS-native capabilities.
- Support VPC, subnet, security group, endpoint, and network architecture decisions.
- Implement infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (Terraform preferred) .
- Define deployment patterns across Development, Test, Non-Production, and Production environments.
- Design backup, restore, disaster recovery, and business continuity mechanisms.
- Support AWS security reviews and remediation activities.
Migration & Modernization
- Lead database and data migration initiatives into AWS.
- Assess source systems and define migration approaches and target AWS architectures.
- Use AWS DMS, DataSync, Transfer Family, Glue, S3, and related AWS services for migration and integration.
- Define data reconciliation and validation strategies.
- Support migration cutover, rollback planning, and post-migration stabilization.
- Identify opportunities to modernize legacy workloads using AWS-native and serverless capabilities.
Technical Leadership & Ownership
- Serve as the technical lead and primary AWS architecture authority for the project.
- Own architecture decisions for the AWS cloud and data/database platform.
- Lead architecture and technical design discussions with client and internal stakeholders.
