What they need
We are looking for a Lead BI Developer to deliver the dashboards, reporting and self-service environment for the analytics platform of a national-scale foundational identity programme in West Africa.
You will build the executive dashboards on which the programme is managed, a substantial catalogue of operational reports, and — most importantly — the self-service environment through which the client's own staff author their own content without coming to us.
The platform is Apache Superset over a governed semantic layer. Business logic lives in the model, not in chart definitions, and part of your job is holding that line. Access control matters: users in one administrative area must not see another's data, which is enforced through row-level security rather than by maintaining separate copies of everything.
Success in this role is not measured by how much content you deliver. It is measured by how much the client authors themselves six months after you have handed over.
Must-have criteria
- At least six years in business intelligence development, of which three or more delivering to an enterprise or government user base.
- Production experience of Apache Superset, including administration and row-level security — or demonstrable depth in a comparable platform with clear evidence of transferable practice.
- SQL at depth, and the discipline to work against a governed data model rather than embedding business logic in the reporting layer.
- Has designed reporting for non-technical audiences at executive and operational level.
- Has implemented access control segregating data by organisational or geographic unit.
- Has trained or enabled client users to author their own content.
Desirable
- A second BI platform — Power BI, Tableau, Metabase or similar — as evidence of transferable practice.
- Government or public sector reporting, including statutory or board-level obligations.
- dbt-modelled data as a consumer.
- Trino or a comparable federated query engine.
- Experience rationalising a large legacy report estate.
- Basic Python for data preparation.
Expected hours: 40.0 – 45.0 per week
Application Question(s):
- Have you delivered software into a multi-party programme, where the organisation deploying it was not the one building it?
- Have you delivered production work in an on-premise or hybrid environment (not cloud-only)?
Experience:
- On-premises: 6 years (Required)
Work Location: In person
