Lead Continuous Miner Operator

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced and safety-driven Continuous Miner Operator to join our underground coal mining team. The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of 5 years of direct experience operating remote-controlled continuous mining machines in an underground environment. Crucially, this role requires specialized B-cut (extended/deep cut) experience, demonstrating an expert understanding of advanced cutting sequences, ventilation curtain management, and strict compliance with approved Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) deep-cut plans. You will be responsible for maximizing coal extraction efficiency while maintaining the highest standard of structural and atmospheric safety at the working face.

Key Responsibilities

• Equipment Operation: Safely and efficiently operate remote-controlled continuous mining machinery to cut, rip, and load coal onto shuttle cars or mobile haulage systems.
• B-Cut Execution: Execute precise A-cut and B-cut sequencing in accordance with the mine’s specific extended cut ventilation and roof control plans. Ensure the machine and personnel maintain proper positioning relative to the last row of permanent roof support.
• Atmospheric Testing: Perform continuous methane gas checks and air quality monitoring at the face before, during, and after cutting cycles to ensure compliance with legal thresholds.
• Ventilation & Dust Control: Direct and assist the crew in advancing ventilation tubing, water sprays, and line curtains to effectively suppress coal dust and sweep away toxic or explosive gases.
• Strata Assessment: Conduct visual and physical inspections of the roof, face, and ribs to identify structural anomalies, slips, or hazards prior to initiating a cut.
• Routine Maintenance: Perform pre-shift safety checks on equipment. Clean, lubricate, adjust cutting components, and swap out blunt or damaged carbide teeth/bits using impact tools.
• Crew Coordination: Communicate clearly via radio and visual signals with shuttle car operators, roof bolters, and section foremen to keep a continuous, collision-free production cycle.

Required Qualifications & Skills

• Experience: Minimum of 5 years of verified experience as a Continuous Miner Operator in underground coal operations.
• Specialized Expertise: Documented proficiency executing approved B-cuts (extended cuts beyond the standard 20-foot limit) using remote control configurations.
• Certifications: Valid MSHA Underground Miner Certification and equipment-specific operation tickets.
• Safety Knowledge: In-depth understanding of federal MSHA regulations regarding face ventilation, remote-control safety zones, and roof control plans.
• Technical Proficiency: Strong understanding of hydraulic and electrical components on modern continuous mining units (e.g., Komatsu/Joy, Cat).

Physical Demands & Working Conditions

• Ability to work in confined, low-ceiling underground environments for extended shifts.
• Ability to lift, carry, and maneuver heavy equipment or ventilation supplies up to 75 lbs regularly.
• Capable of walking or crawling on uneven, slick, or inclined mine floors.
• Tolerance for working in environments with vibrations, noise, and artificial lighting.

Pay: $24.23 - $30.38 per hour

Expected hours: 40.0 per week
