Job Description Summary

The Controls & Operability team is seeking a controls engineer with demonstrated wind turbine controls expertise. This global engineering role encompasses the design, implementation, and validation of turbine control features that meet product safety, performance, and grid compliance requirements. Responsibilities include leading requirements discussions, developing conceptual designs, conducting reviews with CTHs to select optimal designs, and oversee implementation and validation. The role also requires independently investigating and resolving field issues.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities

  • Lead requirements discussions for controls features, collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams to define system-level and software-level requirements.
  • Design algorithms to meet product-level and system-level requirements. Lead the development of control algorithms that improve turbine performance, reduce mechanical loading, ensure grid compliance, and maintain high availability.
  • Implement and validate control algorithms in the loads simulation environment and on the GE MarkVIe PLC, following product requirements flow-down.
  • Independently investigate and analyze complex controls issues occurring in the fleet of installed turbines and develop corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with Loads and Validation teams to assess the impact of controls strategies on mechanical loads through simulation and measurement data analysis.
  • Provide wind turbine controls expertise across all phases of product development, from requirements definition through design, validation, and life-cycle support.
  • Communicate findings and recommendations to internal and external stakeholders through technical reports, presentations, and records.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of the controller development and loads simulation infrastructure

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Science from an accredited University or equivalent knowledge or experience
  • Significant years of significant controls development experience
  • Significant years of wind turbine controls experience
  • Proven ability to work with multicultural, globally distributed teams.
  • Fluency in English

Desired Characteristics:

  • Advanced degree (MSc, PhD) with a focus on controls, wind energy, or system dynamics
  • Relevant experience in significant wind turbine product experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to clearly communicate complex/technical information orally and in writing
  • In-depth understanding of wind turbine design processes and the Onshore Wind NPI process.
  • Problem analysis and resolution skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to thrive in a global team environment.
  • Good understanding of classical (transfer functions, frequency domain design, etc) and modern (state-space, optimal control, etc) control theory
  • Experience with Model-Based design of control systems
  • Experience with state estimation techniques (e.g. EKF)
  • Proficiency in Matlab/Simulink or similar program
  • Experience with real-time control systems such as the GE MarkVIe
  • Ability to code in at least one programming language such as C or Delphi.
  • Wind turbine product knowledge
  • Experience with the grid market including renewable integration and required services
  • Track record of filing Invention Disclosure Letters and patent applications
