What they need

Lead Electrical Engineer – High Voltage Systems

Location: Troy, Michigan (Onsite)

Company: Hybrid Design Services, Inc. (HDS)

Employment Type: Full-Time

Salary: Up to $180,000 , depending on experience and overall fit.

Lead the Development of Advanced Electrified Vehicle Systems

Hybrid Design Services (HDS) is a growing engineering and manufacturing company specializing in high-voltage battery systems, power distribution, vehicle electrification, and ruggedized energy systems for commercial, specialty, and defense applications.

We are seeking an experienced Lead Electrical Engineer to lead the architecture and development of high-voltage and low-voltage electrical systems.

This is a senior, hands-on technical role—not primarily a people-management position.

At HDS, engineers own complete systems. You will work from initial architecture and component selection through prototype development, vehicle integration, testing, troubleshooting, and customer delivery.

If you have strong EV, hybrid, battery, commercial vehicle, heavy-equipment, or defense electrical-system experience and enjoy solving difficult problems directly with hardware, this may be a great fit.

What You'll Do

+Electrical System Architecture

Lead the development of vehicle and system-level electrical architectures for:

  • High-voltage battery systems
  • High-voltage power distribution
  • Low-voltage and auxiliary electrical systems
  • Vehicle electrical interfaces

Select and integrate components including:

  • Battery packs and Battery Management Systems (BMS)
  • Contactors and precharge systems
  • HVIL systems
  • Isolation monitoring devices
  • Fuses and electrical protection devices
  • DC-DC converters
  • Inverters
  • Sensors
  • Power distribution hardware

Define electrical interfaces between vehicle subsystems, evaluate design alternatives, perform engineering trade studies, and participate in electrical schematic and design reviews.

+Systems Engineering

Develop and maintain key engineering deliverables, including:

  • System and functional requirements
  • Interface definitions
  • Requirements traceability
  • DFMEAs
  • DVP&R
  • Verification and validation plans
  • Functional descriptions
  • Electrical and system architecture documentation

Work with multidisciplinary engineering teams to ensure designs meet customer, performance, safety, and system-level requirements.

+Prototype Development & Vehicle Integration

This position goes beyond documentation and analysis. You will work directly with prototype hardware and vehicles.

Responsibilities include:

  • Supporting prototype builds and system integration
  • Troubleshooting electrical and system-level issues
  • Performing root-cause investigations
  • Verifying high-voltage system operation
  • Supporting laboratory and vehicle testing
  • Confirming that implemented hardware meets design intent
  • Resolving issues discovered during development and validation

+Technical Leadership

Work closely with mechanical, controls, software, manufacturing, and customer engineering teams.

You will:

  • Help define system behavior, diagnostics, and electrical interfaces
  • Identify technical risks early in development
  • Recommend practical engineering solutions
  • Participate in customer technical reviews
  • Provide technical guidance throughout development programs
  • Help drive designs from concept through functioning hardware

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechatronics , or a related engineering discipline
  • 8+ years of relevant electrical systems engineering experience
  • Significant experience with automotive, EV/hybrid, battery, commercial vehicle, heavy-equipment, or defense electrical systems
  • Strong understanding of high-voltage battery systems, electrical power distribution, protection, vehicle electrical architecture, and system integration
  • Experience developing electrical architectures and selecting/integrating components , rather than only implementing existing designs
  • Experience with system engineering documentation such as requirements, DFMEAs, DVP&R, interface documentation, and verification plans
  • Hands-on experience supporting prototype development, testing, and electrical troubleshooting
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work onsite in Troy, Michigan

Candidates with somewhat fewer years of experience may be considered if they have substantial hands-on experience specifically with EV, hybrid, high-voltage battery, or vehicle electrical systems.

Preferred Experience

Experience with one or more of the following is beneficial:

  • High-voltage battery and power-distribution systems
  • Battery Management Systems (BMS)
  • Contactors, precharge, HVIL, and isolation monitoring
  • MATLAB / Simulink
  • SPICE / PSpice
  • Vector CANalyzer / CANape
  • CAN-based vehicle systems
  • Functional Safety / ISO 26262 concepts
  • PCB schematic review using Altium, OrCAD, or equivalent
  • Commercial vehicle electrification
  • Defense vehicle electrical systems

Experience with equivalent engineering tools and technologies is welcomed.

The Engineer We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who wants to understand and influence the complete system , not just an individual component.

You should be comfortable asking questions such as:

  • Is this the right electrical architecture?
  • What happens during a fault?
  • Is this the right contactor, fuse, or protection strategy?
  • How should the HVIL and isolation monitoring be implemented?
  • How should this subsystem interface with the rest of the vehicle?
  • Is there a simpler, safer, or more robust solution?
  • Does the actual hardware behave the way the design says it should?

We value engineers who combine strong analytical skills with practical engineering judgment and hands-on problem solving .

Why HDS?

At HDS, your work won't disappear into a massive engineering organization.

Our engineers have the opportunity to influence complete systems and see their designs become functioning hardware.

You'll work on projects involving:

  • Advanced battery systems
  • High-voltage power distribution
  • Commercial and specialty vehicle electrification
  • Defense energy and power-distribution systems
  • Rapid prototype development
  • Customer-facing engineering programs

You'll work directly with engineering, manufacturing, customers, and hardware throughout the development process.

If you're looking for a senior technical role where your engineering judgment matters and you can see your designs become real systems , we'd like to talk with you.
