QA Automation Engineer

Role Overview

Quality in our modernization programme is engineered, not inspected. As a QA Automation Engineer you will build and own the automated test suites that gate every release UI automation in Playwright and Selenium with JavaScript/TypeScript, API and contract testing, and low-code/no-code coverage using tools such as Testing or similar tools where they accelerate delivery. You will embed tests directly into GitLab CI/CD pipelines, keep them fast and non-flaky, and give engineering leadership a trustworthy signal about release readiness across web applications, microservices and integrations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build and maintain end-to-end UI automation suites with Playwright (TypeScript/JavaScript) and Selenium WebDriver.
  • Use low-code/no-code automation platforms such as Testing, mabl or Katalon to broaden coverage quickly, including AI-assisted self-healing locators, while keeping critical paths in code.
  • Build API and service-level automation for REST, GraphQL and gRPC endpoints, including authentication flows, schema validation, negative testing and contract testing.
  • Implement the test-automation architecture: page-object or screenplay patterns, fixtures, reusable components, test-data factories, environment configuration and parallel execution.
  • Contribute to performance and load testing with k6, JMeter or Gatling, and to basic security testing integrated with pipeline scanners.
  • Test event-driven and asynchronous flows: message queues, webhooks, eventual consistency and idempotency verification.
  • Perform security testing in areas of SAST, DAST using tools like SonarQube, Zap to guard necessary security measures.
  • Triage defects with precision reproducible steps, logs, traces, screenshots and video — and drive them to closure with engineering teams.
  • Report quality metrics that matter: escaped-defect rate, automation coverage, mean time to detect, flake rate and release confidence.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Strong hands-on automation experience with Playwright, including fixtures, parallelism, tracing, network interception and auth state reuse.
  • Solid Selenium WebDriver experience and an understanding of when it remains the right tool.
  • Proficient JavaScript and TypeScript programming — you write maintainable, reviewable code, not just scripts.
  • Practical experience with a low-code/no-code test platform such as Testim, mabl, Katalon or Tricentis, and a clear view of its limits.
  • API test automation experience (Playwright APIRequest, REST Assured, Postman/Newman, pytest or supertest) including auth and schema validation.
  • Experience embedding automated tests into CI/CD pipelines, ideally GitLab CI/CD, with reporting and quality gates.
  • Test-framework design skills: structure, reusability, data management and reliability.
  • Strong debugging ability across browser dev tools, network traces, application logs and distributed traces.
  • Working knowledge of Docker and containerized test execution; comfort testing microservices deployed to Kubernetes.
  • Solid SQL for data verification and setup.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 4–8 years in QA automation with substantial code-based framework ownership**.**

QA Automation Manager

Key Responsibilities

  • Own the test automation strategy across the portfolio: coverage targets by risk, shift-left practice, and where automation ends and exploratory testing begins.
  • Own the automation architecture in Playwright test with TypeScript & JavaScript — framework structure, page-object or screenplay patterns, fixtures, custom matchers, shared libraries, test-data factories, parallelization strategy and cross-project reuse.
  • Stay hands-on: review test code and pull requests, build framework components yourself, prototype approaches for hard testing problems, and debug the failures nobody else can reproduce.
  • Set standards for JavaScript and TypeScript test engineering — typing discipline, linting, code review expectations, dependency management and maintainability.
  • Own the integration of automated testing into CI/CD pipelines. Own API, contract and service-level test automation alongside UI coverage, including authentication flows, schema validation, negative testing and event-driven/asynchronous verification.
  • Own test data and environment strategy: seeding and cleanup, masked production-like datasets, service virtualization and mocking of third-party dependencies, and environment readiness.
  • Set the approach for non-functional testing in partnership with engineering — performance and load (JMeter), cross-browser, responsive and visual regression.
  • Security Testing using tools like Burp suite/Zap or similar security testing.
  • Own defect management practice: triage quality, reproducibility standards, severity and priority discipline, root-cause trends and closed-loop feedback into engineering practice.

Required Skills & Experience

  • 10+ years in QA Automation testing with 3+ years hands-on expertise with Playwright. Expert TypeScript and strong JavaScript — you write and review maintainable code, not just test scripts.
  • Proven ownership of a test automation framework from design through adoption, including the architectural decisions and the migration path from whatever came before.
  • 3+ years managing QA or software engineers directly, with a demonstrable record of both shipping and developing people. API and contract test automation experience — REST, schema validation, Oauth flows, and tools such as Playwright APIRequest, Postman/Newman or Pact.
  • Solid understanding of modern application architecture — microservices, containers, Kubernetes, event-driven flows — and how each changes the testing approach.
  • Strong SQL for data setup, verification and reconciliation.
