Lead Software Engineer

We have been retained by a well-established and growing insurance provider. What makes this opportunity unusual is that this is not an early-stage startup. The company is a long-established, profitable business with a national customer base, strong domain expertise, real production data, and a very clear set of operational problems to solve. They are now building an internal software capability for the first time, and this person will be the first engineer.

The initial mandate is to build the software layer that sits above the company’s existing systems of record: data-dense operating dashboards, workflow tools, third-party integrations, and supporting backend services. The goal is to replace manual processes and spreadsheet-heavy workflows with software that operators will actually want to use every day.

This role has substantial autonomy. You would work directly with the President and business leaders, shape the technical approach, make architecture decisions, build the first production application, and establish the foundation for how software is developed internally going forward.

They are especially interested in someone strong in React/TypeScript, full-stack development, API integrations, and end-to-end product ownership. Experience in insurance, payments, lending, claims, healthcare, or another regulated environment is helpful but not required—the priority is finding an exceptional engineer who can understand a business problem and turn it into reliable, thoughtful software.

The engineer will own the design, construction, and operation of the internally developed software, including:

Front-end applications and operating dashboards. Data-dense interfaces covering claims, contracts, dealer performance, and the operational metrics on which the business is managed.

Third-party integrations. Connections to the underlying administration platform's published API, dealer management systems, and additional services as requirements expand.

Supporting backend services. The data services, caching, and business logic that sit between systems of record and the user-facing application.

Internal tooling and automation. Replacing work currently performed manually between disconnected systems.

The initial deliverable is a functioning front-end application operating against live production data.

Required qualifications

• Demonstrated strength in modern front-end engineering, including React or a comparable framework and TypeScript, with experience building performant data-dense interfaces
• Substantial experience integrating with third-party APIs, including systems with incomplete documentation or inconsistent behavior; competence in authentication, rate limiting, error handling, and failure recovery
• Full-stack capability sufficient to own the path from external service call through to rendered interface
• A record of owning software end to end — architecture, implementation, deployment, and ongoing operation. This role has no engineering leadership above it
• The judgment and communication skills to work directly with non-technical leadership: translating operational problems into technical plans, and identifying where a proposed approach will not work

Preferred qualifications

• Experience in a regulated or financially sensitive domain — insurance, payments, lending, claims processing, or healthcare billing
• Business-to-business software used daily by non-technical users in time-sensitive settings
• Prior experience as the first or sole engineer in an organization

Pay: $140,000.00 - $150,000.00 per year
