Lead Software Engineer (Typescript / AWS)

Lead Engineer (AWS, TypeScript, NodeJS)

Hybrid, London (2 days a week on site) | £90-120k

An established consumer business is building an in house engineering team, and this is the first hire.

You’d report to the Head of Engineering and help shape the team from the start. That means hiring, setting how the team works, and growing it to around a squad of 4-6 engineers over the next few months.

What you’ll do

• Lead and grow a new engineering team, and help hire the engineers who join after you.
• Own the AWS estate. There’s no separate cloud or platform team, so you’d decide what should be there and what shouldn’t, and keep it in good shape.
• Design and build services in TypeScript and Node, and pick up front end work in React and Next.js when it’s needed.
• Help deliver migration away from a legacy platform onto a newer TypeScript stack.
• Raise the quality of the existing TypeScript codebase.
• Take over infrastructure as code (Terraform) as it’s introduced, and look after it over time.
• Care about how things run in production. That means monitoring, alerting and knowing when something isn’t right before anyone else does.

What you’ll need

• Solid commercial experience with TypeScript and Node.
• Strong, hands-on AWS experience, enough to run the infrastructure without a dedicated cloud team behind you.
• Willingness to work across the stack, including front end.
• Experience leading engineers, whether as a tech lead or engineering lead.
• A track record of owning systems in production, not just shipping features.

Nice to have

• Ability to read legacy code.
• Terraform or other infrastructure as code experience.
• Experience building a team, or helping one move from outsourced to in-house.
