Lead Substation Engineer

Our client is a substation engineering firm delivering physical layout and protection and control design for utility and power clients. As part of their growth in Texas, they are opening a new office in the state and are seeking an experienced, licensed Lead Engineer to head up a design team there.

This is a senior technical leadership position reporting directly to the Divisional Manager, with responsibility for a small team of engineers and CAD designers. You will be the sealing engineer for the majority of the team’s work and the main point of contact for key clients.

The successful candidate will combine strong substation design expertise across physical and P&C with genuine people leadership, mentoring the team, owning the technical quality of their output, and helping grow business with select clients.

Key responsibilities:

• Mentoring and scheduling the work of junior engineers, designers and CAD operators, including training Project Engineers I and II
• Acting as the client’s point of contact on existing projects, managing satisfaction and identifying future work
• Performing and directing project design, including engineering calculations, design software and relevant procedures and design manuals
• Sealing the majority of the team’s design packages as the responsible PE
• Preparing and directing complex project documents, including specifications and bid documents
• Leading detailed drawing reviews and mark-ups of full plan sets to ensure clear, accurate design intent
• Supporting business development with select clients
• Championing a strong safety culture across the team and on projects

What they’re looking for:

• B.S. in Electrical Engineering
• 5–10 years of substation engineering experience
• Licensed Professional Engineer (PE)
• Hands-on experience across several areas of substation work, such as physical layout, P&C design, relay settings, field support, commissioning and relay testing
• Experience mentoring or supervising engineers and designers
• Confidence managing client relationships at project level
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook
