What they need

Learning & Engagement Officer

St Canice’s Cathedral, Kilkenny | Part-Time

St Canice’s Cathedral is seeking an enthusiastic, organised and experienced Learning & Engagement Officer to develop and deliver an engaging programme of educational and learning experiences for schools, adult learners, families and community groups.

This is a hands-on, standalone role for someone who can work independently, bring creative ideas to life and manage the day-to-day delivery of the Cathedral’s learning programme. Working with the General Manager, the successful candidate will be responsible for planning the annual programme, developing workshops and courses, coordinating tutors, managing the agreed budget and identifying suitable grant funding opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, develop and deliver an annual programme of learning and engagement activities for schools, adult learners, families and community groups.
  • Design and facilitate educational tours, workshops, short courses and creative learning experiences.
  • Develop adult learning opportunities, sourcing suitable tutors and specialist facilitators while delivering sessions personally where appropriate.
  • Manage the annual programme within the agreed budget, monitoring expenditure, income and participation targets.
  • Research relevant grant opportunities, prepare applications and support the delivery and reporting of funded projects.
  • Build relationships with schools, tutors, community organisations and cultural partners.
  • Monitor attendance, gather feedback and evaluate programme outcomes to inform future planning.
  • Work collaboratively with the wider Cathedral team on visitor engagement, heritage projects, marketing and events.

Essential Requirements

  • A relevant third-level qualification in education, arts, heritage, history, community development or a related field, or equivalent relevant professional experience.
  • At least two years of relevant experience in education, learning programme delivery, workshop coordination or community engagement.
  • Demonstrable experience in organising and delivering educational activities, workshops or programmes.
  • Strong organisational, communication and administrative skills, with the ability to work independently and manage competing priorities.
  • The ability to plan activities, work within an agreed budget and deliver against agreed targets.

Desirable Experience

  • Developing adult learning programmes, workshops or short courses.
  • Sourcing and coordinating freelance tutors, artists or specialist facilitators.
  • Preparing grant applications and project proposals.
  • Working within a heritage, cultural, arts, tourism or community organisation.

The successful candidate will be practical, creative and proactive, with a genuine interest in heritage, lifelong learning and community engagement. They will be comfortable taking responsibility for a programme from initial planning through to delivery and evaluation, while working closely with the General Manager and wider Cathedral team.
