What they need

We are looking for a passionate, nurturing and dedicated learning mentor to join our team and support children with mental health and additional needs who may have experienced difficulties engaging with traditional education.

This is a rewarding role for someone who is passionate about making a genuine difference to children’s lives. You will work within our small team developing positive and trusting relationships with the children and helping them to feel safe, understood and confident.

A key part of the role will be supporting children to develop their emotional regulation, socialisation, communication, confidence and resilience, enabling them to overcome barriers to learning and gradually re-engage with education.

Key responsibilities –

· Build strong, positive and trusting relationships with the children.

· Support children with a range of mental health, additional and special educational needs.

· Help children recognise and understand their emotions and develop strategies for emotional regulation.

· Support children to manage anxiety, frustration, change and challenging situations.

· Develop social skills, communication, confidence and positive relationships.

· Encourage children to develop independence, resilience and self-esteem.

· Provide a calm, consistent and nurturing approach.

· Identify individual barriers to learning and develop appropriate strategies to overcome them.

· Support children to engage with learning through personalised and creative activities.

· Help children develop their ability to follow routines, manage expectations and respond positively to adult support.

· Celebrate achievements and recognise progress, however small.

· Support children towards successful re-engagement with education and where appropriate, prepare the children for transition or reintegration into a suitable educational setting.

· Work closely with parents/carers, colleagues and other professionals to ensure a consistent approach.

· Maintain accurate records of progress and contribute to individual support plans and reviews.

· Follow all safeguarding, health and safety and organisational policies and procedures.

About you –

We are looking for someone who is;

· Warm, caring and compassionate.

· Patient, calm and emotionally resilient.

· Confident working with children with mental health and additional needs.

· Able to build positive relationships with children who may have experienced challenges within education.

· Creative and flexible in their approach to learning.

· Understanding of emotional regulation and social development.

· A positive role model who can encourage and motivate children especially in tricky situations.

· Able to work independently while also being part of a supportive team.

· Committed to providing a child-centred and individualised approach.

· Have a minimum level two in either child care early years or health and social care.

Experience with working with SEND, SEMH, alternative provision, specialist education, youth work or a similar environment would be desirable, although the most important qualities are the right attitude, patients and commitment to helping children succeed.

Why join us –

This is an opportunity to become part of a supportive team where every child is recognised as an individual and where small steps can make a huge different.

If you are passionate about helping children overcome barriers, develop their confidence and emotional wellbeing, and find their pathway back into education, we would love to hear from you.

This is a term time only post on a part time basis role.
