What they need

SEND Learning Support Assistant

4myschools are recruiting on behalf of a welcoming and highly supportive primary school that is seeking a dedicated SEND Learning Support Assistant to provide 1:1 support for a pupil with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.

This is a rewarding fixed-term opportunity linked to a named child, offering the chance to make a genuine and lasting difference to a young person's educational journey. The school prides itself on its nurturing, inclusive ethos and its commitment to ensuring every child feels safe, valued and able to succeed. Recognised for its outstanding provision, the school offers a collaborative environment where staff work closely together to provide personalised support and opportunities for all pupils. You will become part of a caring team focused on understanding children's individual needs and providing consistent, child-centred support.

In this role, you will provide dedicated 1:1 support throughout the school day, helping a pupil with SEMH needs access learning, build positive relationships and develop emotional regulation skills. A significant part of your role will involve creating a safe, secure and trusting relationship that enables the pupil to feel understood and supported. You will use co-regulation strategies, proactively identify triggers, implement agreed behaviour and safety plans, support engagement with an individualised curriculum, monitor progress and work closely with the class teacher, SENDCo and external professionals. You will also support social development during less structured times, such as break and lunchtime, encourage independence and confidence, contribute to EHCP provision and One Plans, and help create visual and practical resources that support learning, communication and emotional regulation.

Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will have previous experience supporting children with additional needs, particularly Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, either within a school, alternative provision, youth work, care, mentoring or similar setting.

You will be calm, patient, resilient and emotionally available, with a genuine passion for helping children overcome barriers to learning. Experience of supporting pupils who may display dysregulated behaviour would be highly desirable, although applications are also welcomed from candidates who can demonstrate relevant knowledge and a willingness to undertake further training.

You must understand the importance of developing positive and trusting relationships, maintaining consistent boundaries and supporting emotional regulation through empathy and structure.

Applicants must hold GCSE English and Maths at Grade 4/C or above (or equivalent qualifications).

Excellent communication skills, an ability to work collaboratively with teachers, SEND professionals and parents, and a commitment to safeguarding and inclusion are essential. Due to the location of the school and the nature of the role, access to reliable transport is advantageous to ensure consistent attendance throughout the assignment.
