What they need

Job Summary

We are seeking an energetic, dedicated, and bilingual (English/Spanish) Learning Together Tutoring Instructor to support the academic growth and well-being of K–8 students. Following the traditional McDowell County Schools academic calendar, this role goes beyond standard tutoring to provide holistic support.

Reporting directly to the Program Supervisor, you will provide homework assistance, design and lead weekly STEM activities, facilitate mental health awareness, and coordinate outdoor enrichment. Furthermore, you will build strong relationships with families, collaborate with local schools, and represent CULA at occasional evening or weekend community events.

Key Responsibilities

Program Instruction & Delivery

  • Academic Support: Provide daily homework assistance and academic support to K–8 students in a culturally respectful, inclusive environment.
  • STEM Facilitation: Plan, design, and lead hands-on STEM activities designed to spark curiosity and problem-solving skills.
  • Mental Health & Well-being: Lead a weekly dedicated session focused on Social-Emotional Learning (SEL), mindfulness, and emotional health.
  • Enrichment & Outdoors: Supervise indoor/outdoor activities, recreation, and arts. Coordinate occasional special field trips and events.

Student Support & Behavior Management

  • Positive Environment: Build supportive relationships, encourage positive behavior, and model respectful communication.
  • Behavior Management: Use positive behavior supports and restorative conversations. Address unacceptable behaviors through redirection, progressive discipline (including behavior contracts), and prompt response to bullying concerns.

Family, School, & Community Engagement

  • Family Partnerships: Welcome families of all backgrounds. Communicate regularly regarding student progress, behavior, and individual needs via WhatsApp, phone calls, and announcements.
  • School & Community Outreach: Partner effectively with local McDowell County schools to align program goals with classroom learning.
  • Resource Coordination: Collaborate with community partners—such as coordinating the McDowell County Public Library’s Bookmobile monthly visit.

Program Operations & Safety

  • Safety & Protocols: Follow all health, safety, and emergency procedures. Document incidents and injuries, and implement reporting protocols.
  • Logistics: Maintain accurate sign‑in/sign‑out records, ensure students are released only to authorized individuals, and follow late pick-up procedures. Support snack distribution and classroom sanitation.

Metrics, Reporting & Program Coordination

  • Tracking & Monthly Reports: Track daily attendance, participation, and behavioral trends. Prepare a monthly program report for the Program Supervisor summarizing performance, highlights, and needs.
  • Presentations: Present monthly results to the Executive Team and staff, and support annual evaluation efforts (surveys, feedback collection).
  • Meetings & Events: Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and CULA’s mission-driven organizational events (which may occasionally take place during evenings or weekends). Provide feedback for continuous program improvement.

Job Requirements

  • Experience working with children or youth in educational, childcare, or community settings.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and behavior‑management skills.
  • Ability to supervise groups of children safely and effectively.
  • Knowledge of youth development, trauma‑informed practices, or SEL preferred.
  • CPR and First Aid certification preferred (or willingness to obtain).
  • Ability to lead both indoor and outdoor activities.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to follow established procedures.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and uphold professional boundaries.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred but not required.
  • Basic computer skills, including Google Workspace, for tracking metrics and preparing reports.
