For over 65 years, we've been committed to delivering value to our customers while creating opportunities for our employees to grow and succeed. We’re currently seeking a Leave & Workers Compensation Coordinator to join our team.

Role Overview

We are looking for a detail-oriented Leave and Workers Compensation Coordinator to manage employee leave and injury claims across our multi-state retail operations. You will be the day-to-day point of contact for employees, supervisors, and our claims partners, ensuring leave and claim activity is accurate, compliant, and handled with care. We provide full training on our systems and on state-specific requirements. This position is based at Big 5's headquarters in El Segundo, California.

Key Responsibilities

  • Process and track leave requests under FMLA, CFRA, and other applicable federal, state, and local leave laws, including state paid family leave programs.
  • Open, document, and manage workers’ compensation claims from first report of injury through return to work, in coordination with our third-party administrator.
  • Serve as the primary contact for employees, supervisors, and medical providers on leave and claim status, communicating clearly and compassionately.
  • Maintain accurate records in our HRIS and claims systems, and support audit and reporting requirements.
  • Monitor deadlines and notice requirements across states to ensure timely, compliant employee communication.
  • Coordinate return-to-work and accommodation processes with HR and operations leaders.
  • Identify process gaps and recommend improvements to leave and claims workflows.

Qualifications

  • 1–3 years of experience administering leaves of absence and/or workers’ compensation claims.
  • Working knowledge of FMLA and state leave laws, or a strong willingness to learn them quickly.
  • Strong attention to detail and comfort handling confidential medical and personnel information.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and experience with HRIS or claims management systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business, or a related field.
  • Professional HR certification (PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, or SHRM-SCP) or progress toward one.
  • Experience with a multi-state employer or in a retail environment.
  • Familiarity with state workers’ compensation systems.
