Legal Trustee

Organisation: Focus Birmingham

Location: Remote, with some meetings in Harborne, Birmingham (B17 9AT)

Time Commitment: Approximately 8 meetings per year, plus occasional ad hoc meetings

Salary: Voluntary (unpaid)

Focus Birmingham is a charity dedicated to supporting people with sight loss and complex needs, empowering individuals to live life to the full.

We are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Legal Trustee to join our Board and help shape the future of our organisation.

About the Role

As our Legal Trustee, you will bring valuable legal knowledge and strategic insight to our Board of Trustees, helping to ensure Focus Birmingham operates effectively, responsibly and in line with its charitable objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide strategic legal insight and guidance to the Board and Executive Team.
• Support effective governance, regulatory compliance and risk management.
• Contribute to discussions and decisions about the charity's future direction.
• Offer insight into legal matters, including contracts, employment, charity governance and regulatory responsibilities.
• Support the Board in identifying legal risks and opportunities.
• Champion the charity's values, mission and commitment to inclusion.

About You

We would particularly welcome applications from individuals who have:

• Professional experience within the legal sector, ideally as a solicitor, barrister or legal specialist.
• Knowledge of charity law, governance, employment law, commercial law or regulatory compliance.
• Strong analytical skills and the ability to provide balanced, strategic advice.
• Excellent communication skills and the confidence to contribute to Board discussions.
• A genuine interest in supporting people with sight loss and complex needs.
• Previous trustee experience would be beneficial but is not essential.
