What they need

Licensed Professional Engineer (PE)

Nelson Associates Architectural Engineering, PC is seeking an experienced, licensed Professional Engineer to join our multidisciplinary team. This position is ideal for a practical, well-rounded engineer with experience in structural, architectural, civil, or closely related engineering work.

The successful candidate will support a diverse mix of residential, commercial, industrial, and municipal projects through field inspections, evaluations, design, construction drawings, technical consultation, and project oversight. We are looking for someone who can confidently assess existing conditions, develop practical solutions, communicate clearly with clients and contractors, and carry projects from initial investigation through final deliverables.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Perform field inspections and engineering evaluations of residential, commercial, industrial, and municipal buildings and structures.
  • Evaluate structural conditions, construction deficiencies, damage, deterioration, code-related concerns, and proposed modifications.
  • Prepare clear, accurate inspection reports, engineering opinions, recommendations, and consultation documents.
  • Develop and review construction drawings, structural details, calculations, specifications, and supporting technical documentation.
  • Design repair, reinforcement, renovation, and new-construction solutions appropriate to project conditions and client needs.
  • Provide engineering consultation to property owners, contractors, architects, municipalities, developers, and other professionals.
  • Review architectural and construction documents for structural feasibility, coordination, and code compliance.
  • Respond to contractor questions, review field conditions, and provide construction-phase support as needed.
  • Coordinate with clients, internal staff, consultants, contractors, code officials, and other project stakeholders.
  • Manage assigned projects, including scope, schedule, budget, documentation, and client communication.
  • Review work prepared by designers, drafters, and junior engineering staff.
  • Sign and seal drawings, reports, and other engineering documents within the engineer’s areas of professional competence.
  • Assist with quality-control reviews and contribute to the development of consistent internal engineering standards.
  • Conduct site visits throughout the company’s service area as required.

Project Types

The position may include work involving:

  • Residential additions, renovations, repairs, and new construction
  • Structural inspections and condition assessments
  • Foundation, framing, roof, floor, and load-bearing wall evaluations
  • Commercial building alterations and tenant improvements
  • Industrial facilities and existing-condition assessments
  • Municipal buildings, facilities, and public-sector projects
  • Structural repairs, reinforcement, and stabilization
  • Construction drawings and permit documents
  • Code compliance and feasibility consultations
  • Construction administration and field observations
  • Coordination of architectural, structural, civil, and MEP-related project requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Active Professional Engineer license, preferably in New York State, or the ability to obtain New York licensure through reciprocity promptly.
  • Bachelor’s degree in structural, civil, architectural, or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • Relevant professional experience involving buildings, structures, inspections, construction drawings, or related consulting work.
  • Strong understanding of structural systems, construction methods, materials, and applicable building codes.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate existing conditions and develop practical, constructible engineering solutions.
  • Experience preparing or reviewing calculations, drawings, details, technical reports, and specifications.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities with appropriate attention to deadlines and detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate technical information clearly to clients, contractors, and individuals without an engineering background.
  • Sound professional judgment and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with a combination of residential, commercial, industrial, and municipal projects.
  • Background in structural engineering, architectural engineering, building design, forensic evaluation, or existing-building assessment.
  • Experience working directly with property owners, contractors, architects, municipalities, and code officials.
  • Familiarity with New York State building codes and local permitting requirements.
  • Experience with structural analysis and design software and CAD-based drawing production.
  • Experience supervising or mentoring junior engineers and design staff.
  • Additional PE licenses or eligibility for licensure in other states.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is technically capable, practical, and comfortable working in both the field and the office. This person understands that successful engineering requires more than calculations: it requires careful observation, clear documentation, responsive communication, and solutions that can realistically be constructed.

We are seeking someone who takes ownership of their projects, exercises sound judgment, communicates honestly, and values accuracy without losing sight of schedule, budget, and the client’s underlying needs.

Position Details

  • Full-time position
  • Combination of office-based work and field inspections
  • Local and regional travel required
  • Compensation commensurate with experience, qualifications, and licensure
  • Benefits and additional employment details to be discussed during the interview process
