What they need
Licensed Veterinary Technician — Surgery
Oakland Veterinary Referral Services | Bloomfield Hills, Michigan
Full-time | On-site
Build your surgical nursing career with a team that values your expertise.
Oakland Veterinary Referral Services (OVRS) is seeking experienced Licensed Veterinary Technicians to join our Surgery Service. If you enjoy anesthesia, hands-on patient care, and the challenge of complex surgical cases, this is an opportunity to contribute your skills while continuing to grow.
At OVRS, technicians are active participants in patient care. We encourage you to think critically, contribute to case discussions, exercise clinical judgment within your scope of practice, and take ownership of your nursing responsibilities. You’ll work alongside six board-certified surgeons, with support from an anesthesiologist, surgical coordinator, sterilization technician, and veterinary assistants.
What you’ll do
- Provide attentive nursing care for orthopedic and soft-tissue surgery patients before, during, and after procedures.
- Prepare patients for anesthesia and surgery, monitor anesthesia, and support safe recovery.
- Recognize changes in patient status and communicate promptly with the clinical team.
- Help maintain surgical readiness through patient preparation, aseptic technique, and coordination with the surgery support team.
- Educate clients about surgical preparation, discharge instructions, and postoperative care.
- Collaborate with colleagues across specialty services to support continuity of care.
The resources to support your work
OVRS is a multi-specialty referral hospital with services spanning emergency and critical care, anesthesia, internal medicine, oncology, cardiology, ophthalmology, dermatology, behavior, holistic medicine/acupuncture, and surgery.
Our diagnostic and treatment capabilities include CT, digital radiography, ultrasound, endoscopy, laparoscopy, arthroscopy, mechanical ventilation, ECG telemetry, invasive blood pressure monitoring, comprehensive in-house laboratory testing, transfusion therapies, and cold compression therapy.
Grow your skills and pursue your interests
We support continuing education and encourage technicians interested in pursuing Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) certification. Several OVRS technicians are pursuing specialty credentials in surgery and anesthesia. Whether you want to deepen your anesthesia skills or build a long-term career in surgical nursing, you’ll join colleagues who value learning and shared expertise.
What you’ll bring
- Current Licensed Veterinary Technician credential.
- An associate degree in veterinary technology.
- At least one year of anesthesia experience.
- Strong patient assessment skills, attention to detail, and a commitment to safe perioperative care.
- Clear, respectful communication with clients, colleagues, referring veterinarians, and hospital leadership.
- The ability to work independently within your role and collaboratively in a busy specialty hospital.
What we offer
- Competitive compensation and a comprehensive benefits package.
- A collaborative environment where technicians have a voice in patient care.
- Access to advanced equipment and experienced specialty teams.
- Support for professional development and specialty certification.
Our surgeons operate Monday through Friday; individual work schedules will be discussed during the interview process. Benefits eligibility waiting periods may apply.
