Lifeguard Instructor

Job Summary

The Lifeguard Instructor is responsible for teaching American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguard courses. The incumbent may also teach CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Lifeguard Management, AED Essentials, Oxygen Administration for the Professional Rescuer, Preventing Disease Transmission, Community Water Safety and Basic Water Rescue.

Responsibilities

• Arranges, prepares and conducts Lifeguard Training classes in accordance with ARC standards.

• Observes and directs all class participants and provides feedback and appropriate correction.

• Communicates consistently to each participant throughout the class about performance, progress, goals and needs.

• Maintains comprehensive knowledge of ARC subject matter for courses taught.

• Completes all required records, forms and reports including attendance records, class rosters, and certification forms.

• Coordinates course offerings with the Aquatics Supervisor.

• Assesses and informs the Aquatics Supervisor of equipment and supply needs.

• Prepares classroom for training, inventories and maintains all course materials and equipment.

Performs all other related duties as requested or assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

• High School diploma or equivalent
• One year of experience in the area of aquatics, including experience as a lifeguard
• Prior experience in an instructional capacity preferred

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Current American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguard/CPR/AED/First Aid and Lifeguard Instructor Certification
• Comprehensive knowledge of ARC safety and life saving techniques
• Ability to read and interpret training materials and articulate thoughts and ideas to others
• Ability to think in the abstract, instruct, evaluate and supervise training activities
• Ability to perform all rescue skills being taught and demonstrate proper techniques
• Organizational and time-management skills
• Ability to problem solve and exercise independent judgement
• Self-directed and detailed oriented

Mental Effort

• Ability to remain alert with no lapses of consciousness for long periods of time in a warm environment with air temperature of 80 degrees Fahrenheit or higher
• Ability to recognize distress signals
• See, observe and hear all participants and make sound judgements and decisions even when distracted by noise and activity
• Perform all swimming skills and techniques being taught
• Attention to safety standards, procedures, and practices

Physical Requirements

• Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness in a warm environment with air temperatures of 80 degrees Fahrenheit or higher
• Ability to be in the water for extended periods of time and move to various locations both in and out of the water
• Perceive, identify and respond to signs of distress
• Perform physical tasks necessary for water rescues as practiced by ARC lifeguard training
• Communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud working conditions
• Bending, lifting, carrying
