Our Aquatics team are hiring Lifeguards for our upcoming summer pool season, running from November 2026 to March 2027, with fixed-term opportunities available, as well as permanent vacancies across our facilities.

About the role | Ko te mahi nei

Lifeguards are at the heart of our facilities, helping create a safe, welcoming and enjoyable experience for everyone who visits. You’ll be responsible for keeping a constant watch over pool users, responding quickly in an emergency and helping our customers feel confident and supported while they’re at our facilities.

You’ll also:

• Provide friendly, helpful customer service and assist with enquiries.
• Keep our pools and facilities clean, safe and up to the required standards.
• Follow safety procedures and contribute to a positive, can-do team environment.
• Encourage people to enjoy our facilities and support their ongoing participation.

About you | Ko Koe Tēnei

To thrive in this role, you'll:

• Bring great customer service skills and care about creating a positive experience for our visitors and their whānau and friends.
• Be confident, quick-thinking and able to connect with people from all walks of life.
• Be able to maintain focus for long periods and stay calm under pressure.
• Be a capable swimmer.
• Community involvement matters – this could be being part of a sports team, club, school or community group, coaching or volunteering. If you’re involved in something like this, we’d love to hear about it in your application.
• Hold a current First Aid Certificate, or be able to obtain one at your own cost before starting.

Not sure you’re ready for the swim test? No problem! We’re happy to support you with tips and practice to help you get there. You’ll find the swim test requirements attached to the position description at the foot of this page.

Important parts of the process

• If your application meets the initial criteria, you’ll be invited to complete a mandatory swim test. Swim test sessions will be scheduled between3 September - 8 September. Once you complete the swim test, we'll be in touch about the next steps.
• Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a group-style assessment centre on Tuesday 15 September 2026, at Te Hāpua Halswell Centre. Morning and afternoon sessions will be available, and we’re unable to accommodate interviews outside these times.
• If successful, you’ll be required to attend Pool Lifeguard Skills Award (PLSA) training, we have a range of dates available for this throughout October, more information on this will be found in the application questions. Christchurch City Council will cover the cost. If you already hold a current PLPC, you won’t need to attend the final assessment.
• Health & Police checks: This role is subject to satisfactory police vetting and a pre-employment health assessment, which will take place on the week of the 28th of September.

Available locations & shift hours

We’re looking to recruitfixed-term Lifeguards for the summer pool season (November 2026 to March 2027), as well as permanent opportunities that have become available across our network of facilities.

Our standard operating hours across our indoor and outdoor facilities range from 5:30am - 9:30pm, with a variety of shifts available. This means some shifts may start as early as 5:00am or finish as late as 10:00pm. As part of your application, you’ll be asked to provide your availability and select the facility locations you’re interested in working at, so we can match you to suitable shifts.

• Salary: $29.90 per hour – the new NZ Living Wage rate from 1 September 2026!
