What they need

Adelaide Metro Operations (AMO) are the proud maintainers of the Adelaide Tram Network. We are responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient delivery of Adelaide’s tram services — maintaining both rolling stock and infrastructure assets under a long-term maintenance-only contract.

We are a dedicated team committed to operational excellence, safety, compliance, and continuous improvement in public transport delivery.

About the Role

We are currently seeking an OHW & Traction Power Technician to join our Rail Infrastructure Maintenance team.

This role is responsible for delivering preventative and corrective maintenance across the Adelaide Tram Network's overhead wiring and traction power infrastructure, ensuring assets remain safe, compliant, available and operationally reliable.

You will undertake inspections, maintenance, testing, fault-finding and repairs across overhead wiring, traction power distribution and associated electrical infrastructure, while supporting renewals, planned works and continuous improvement initiatives.

This is a hands-on, field-based role suited to a technically capable lineworker/electrician who is safety-focused, adaptable and interested in developing specialist capability within rail traction power and overhead wiring systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Inspect, maintain and repair overhead wiring (OHW) infrastructure, including contact wire, catenary systems, section insulators, isolators, feeders, bonding, terminations and associated support equipment.
  • Inspect, maintain, test and fault-find traction power infrastructure, including traction substations, rectifiers, switchgear, DC distribution equipment, protection and control systems and associated electrical assets.
  • Undertake detailed fault investigation and rectification of OHW and traction power equipment, restoring infrastructure to service in a safe and controlled manner while minimising disruption to tram operations.
  • Carry out installation, renewal and upgrade works involving OHW, traction power, cabling, switchgear and associated infrastructure, including assisting with testing and commissioning activities.
  • Undertake electrical and mechanical inspection, testing and measurement of OHW and traction power assets to verify asset condition, electrical integrity and compliance with applicable standards and maintenance requirements.
  • Monitor asset condition and performance, identifying deterioration, wear, electrical defects or abnormal behaviour and initiating corrective maintenance or recommendations to prevent failures and improve reliability.
  • Apply electrical isolation, access, permit and safe-working requirements when working on or around traction power and overhead wiring infrastructure, including proving de-energised and applying appropriate electrical safety controls.
  • Accurately record maintenance activities, faults, inspections, measurements and test outcomes within the asset management system, ensuring safety-critical documentation is complete, traceable and compliant.
  • Apply safe systems of work when accessing and maintaining infrastructure within the rail corridor, including electrical safety, working at heights and rail safety requirements.
  • Provide technical support during faults, incidents, planned works, shutdowns and investigations, contributing practical expertise to restore and maintain network availability.
  • Contribute to improvements in OHW and traction power reliability by identifying recurring faults, asset weaknesses and maintenance optimisation opportunities and supporting engineering and maintenance improvements.
  • Assist in maintaining team capability through knowledge sharing, training and mentoring to support consistent technical and safety standards.
  • Participate in on-call arrangements, providing timely fault response and technical support to maintain traction power and OHW availability and operational continuity.

About You

You are a qualified, safety-conscious lineworker/electrician with strong electrical fault-finding capability and a practical approach to maintenance.

You understand the importance of electrical safety, isolation and controlled work practices and are comfortable working in a field-based operational environment where asset reliability and safe restoration of service are critical.

Previous experience in rail traction power or overhead wiring is highly regarded; however, we are also interested in experienced electricians from industrial, utilities, power distribution or similar environments who demonstrate strong technical capability and a willingness to develop specialist rail infrastructure skills.

Importantly, you are a proactive learner who takes ownership of developing your capability. You are comfortable learning in the field, asking questions, seeking guidance when required and progressively developing the competence required to work safely and independently on specialist traction power and OHW infrastructure.

You demonstrate initiative, accountability and a strong commitment to safety and continuous professional development.

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • Current SA Driver’s Licence
  • Unrestricted Electrical Licence/Certificate III in ESI - Rail Traction
  • Construction Industry White Card
  • Strong electrical fault-finding and diagnostic capability
  • Demonstrated experience maintaining electrical, industrial or power infrastructure
  • Ability to interpret electrical drawings, schematics and technical documentation
  • Demonstrated experience working safely around electrical hazards and applying isolation procedures
  • Ability and willingness to work at heights and within a rail corridor environment
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new systems and technical information
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and take ownership of development
  • Ability to participate in planned after-hours works and on-call fault response arrangements

Desirable (but not essential)

  • Previous experience maintaining rail traction power or overhead wiring systems
  • Experience with HV/LV electrical distribution, switchgear, protection systems or industrial power systems
  • HV switching or electrical access/permit competencies
  • Track Safety Awareness
  • High Risk Work Licence – EWP
  • High Risk Work Licence – Forklift
  • Working at Heights
  • Current Low Voltage Rescue / CPR Certificate
  • MR/HR Driver's Licence
  • Experience working from EWPs or specialised rail access vehicles
  • Knowledge of rail safety legislation and regulatory compliance requirements
  • Experience with asset management systems and safety-critical maintenance documentation
