What they need
Looking for an experienced Linux/AIX Patch Engineer to support enterprise patch management and vulnerability remediation for a large financial services environment.
The engineer will be responsible for identifying, analyzing, testing, deploying, and validating security patches across Linux and AIX servers. This role requires strong hands-on experience with enterprise patching tools, vulnerability management, troubleshooting, patch compliance, and coordination with infrastructure, security, application, and vendor teams.
The ideal candidate will have experience managing patching at enterprise scale and be comfortable working within strict change-management, security, and SLA requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform enterprise-level security patching and vulnerability remediation across Linux and AIX server environments.
- Analyze vulnerability and security reports to identify affected servers, packages, libraries, and software versions.
- Review CVEs, vendor security advisories, patch bulletins, and remediation guidance to determine appropriate fixes.
- Use BigFix or similar enterprise patch-management platforms to deploy, monitor, troubleshoot, and report patches.
- Perform pre-patch assessment, testing, deployment, post-patch validation, and remediation of failed deployments.
- Troubleshoot patch failures by analyzing operating-system logs, package-manager output, BigFix client information, dependencies, disk space, services, repositories, and other system conditions.
- Validate that patches have been successfully installed and that vulnerabilities are no longer detected following remediation scans.
- Investigate discrepancies between patch-management tools and vulnerability scanners.
- Manage patching within established maintenance windows while minimizing business and application disruption.
- Coordinate with application owners, server/infrastructure teams, Information Security, Vulnerability Management, and software vendors when remediation requires additional investigation.
- Support emergency and out-of-band patching for critical vulnerabilities when required.
- Maintain accurate patch compliance, remediation status, exception, and deployment reporting.
- Document patching procedures, troubleshooting steps, remediation activities, known issues, and implementation results.
- Participate in change-management processes, including change planning, implementation, validation, and rollback activities.
- Identify recurring patch failures and recommend process or technical improvements.
- Support audit and compliance requirements by maintaining accurate evidence of patch deployment and vulnerability remediation.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or equivalent professional experience.
- 8+ years of hands-on experience in Linux/AIX administration, enterprise patch management, vulnerability remediation, or a closely related infrastructure role.
- Strong hands-on experience patching AIX and enterprise Linux environments.
- Strong understanding of Linux operating systems such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and/or other enterprise Linux distributions.
- Experience with AIX, including operating-system maintenance, package management, and troubleshooting.
- Strong experience with BigFix or another enterprise patch-management platform.
- Experience working with enterprise vulnerability scanners such as Qualys, Tenable, or similar tools.
- Good understanding of CVEs, security advisories, vulnerability severity, remediation, and patch dependencies.
- Strong troubleshooting and root-cause-analysis skills.
- Experience analyzing operating-system and application logs to diagnose patching and deployment failures.
- Experience working with change management, maintenance windows, production deployments, and rollback procedures.
- Ability to work with large server populations and maintain patch compliance against defined SLAs.
- Strong documentation and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with security, infrastructure, application, and vendor teams in a highly regulated enterprise environment.
What We Are Looking For
The successful candidate should be more than someone who can run patches. They should be able to:
- Understand why a server is vulnerable.
- Determine what patch or remediation is required.
- Safely test and deploy the remediation.
- Troubleshoot when the patch fails.
- Validate that the vulnerability is actually resolved.
- Explain and document the result.
- Manage the process across a large enterprise server environment while meeting security and SLA requirements.
Pay: $45.00 - $50.00 per hour
Benefits:
- Health insurance
- Vision insurance
