The role requires sound professional judgment, strong relationships with students and families, and the ability to step into an established program quickly.
Counseling Responsibilities
Continuity of Services
- Review transition materials and handoff notes from the regular counselor and the principal, and continue existing student caseloads, safety plans, and support plans without interruption.

- Communicate regularly with the School Principal regarding caseload status, student concerns, and program needs.
Student Support & Crisis Response
- Complete suicide threat assessments and safety plans for students, including students involved in violent situations.
- Mediate conflicts with students and work with small student groups and advisory classes.
- Serve as a student advocate to help students and families respond to life events.
- Assist students in orientation to school procedures and academic opportunities, and encourage participation in school and community activities.
- Provide students with information about education opportunities, career exploration, motivation, and self-awareness through workshops and individual counseling, advising, and mentoring.
MTSS, Data & Instruction
- Analyze student and school data to support SRA’s Multi-tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) framework.
- Maintain awareness of Early Warning System Indicators and high-quality, evidence-based instruction, intervention, and assessment practices.
- Provide weekly character education instruction to SRA students in assigned grade levels.
- Participate in staff meetings, MTSS meetings, team building and development sessions, professional development opportunities, faculty meetings, and district/department meetings as scheduled.
Collaboration & Community Resources
- Confer, collaborate, and consult with parents, teachers, colleagues, administrators, and community professionals to help students and families.
- Provide information and referrals for community and educational resources, and maintain working relationships with student support services and community partners.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred
- CPI training.
- Prior experience as a school-based counselor or social worker in a K–8 setting.
- Familiarity with Multi-tiered Systems of Support (MTSS).

- Strong writing, organization, computer, presentation, and public speaking skills.
- Strong human relation skills.
- Proficiency in using data to make decisions.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to work independently as well as in a team setting.
