Low-Voltage Technician – Entry to Mid-Level

Location: Richmond, VA

Temp to Full-Time | Field-Based

Entry-Level through Experienced Technicians Encouraged to Apply

We’re hiring Low Voltage Technicians to join a growing telecommunications and network infrastructure team in the Richmond area.

Whether you’re looking to get started in the low-voltage trade or already have a few years of hands-on experience, this is an opportunity to build your skills while working on a variety of commercial projects involving structured cabling, fiber optics, network infrastructure, security, AV, and other low-voltage systems.

For entry-level technicians, training and mentorship will be provided. More experienced technicians will have the opportunity to take greater ownership of installations, testing, troubleshooting, and supporting junior team members.

What You’ll Do

Your responsibilities will vary based on your experience and skill level and may include:

  • Install, pull, route, dress, label, and secure low-voltage cabling on commercial job sites
  • Work with CAT5/6, coax, copper, fiber optic, AV, access control, intrusion detection, and other structured cabling systems
  • Terminate copper and fiber connections based on experience and project requirements
  • Assist with or independently perform cable testing and basic troubleshooting
  • Install racks, cabinets, cable supports, pathways, and related infrastructure
  • Mount and assist with the installation of equipment such as network switches, cameras, access control devices, UPS units, and other low-voltage components
  • Read and follow blueprints, schematics, cable layouts, scopes of work, and installation instructions
  • Assist with bonding, grounding, firestopping, and other installation requirements
  • Support retrofit and upgrade projects involving existing cabling and equipment
  • Maintain organized tools, equipment, and project materials
  • Communicate daily progress, issues, and material needs to Lead Technicians and project leadership
  • Follow job-site safety procedures, PPE requirements, and quality standards
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and professional work environment

For technicians with more experience, responsibilities may also include independently laying out cable pathways, operating copper and fiber testing equipment, troubleshooting connectivity issues, anticipating material needs, and providing guidance to less-experienced technicians.

What We’re Looking For

We’re open to candidates at different stages of their low-voltage careers.

Entry-Level Candidates

Previous low-voltage experience is helpful, but not required. Candidates coming from construction, electrical, AV, telecommunications, cable installation, mechanical, or other hands-on environments are encouraged to apply.

We’re looking for people who are:

  • Dependable, punctual, and ready to learn
  • Comfortable working with hand and power tools
  • Able to follow detailed instructions and safety procedures
  • Mechanically inclined and comfortable working in an active construction environment
  • Interested in developing a long-term career in the low-voltage or telecommunications industry

Experienced Technicians

Candidates with 1–2+ years of commercial low-voltage or structured cabling experience should ideally have experience with some combination of:

  • CAT5/6 and structured copper cabling
  • Fiber optic cabling
  • Cable termination and testing
  • Coax and multiconductor cabling
  • Access control and security systems
  • CCTV/camera systems
  • AV or wireless infrastructure
  • Reading prints, schematics, and cable layouts
  • Troubleshooting and testing low-voltage systems

Knowledge of cabling standards, color codes, bonding, grounding, firestopping, and commercial construction practices is a plus.

Basic Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent experience
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to work safely and professionally on active commercial job sites
  • Comfortable using basic technology such as smartphones and tablets for field communication and documentation
  • Ability to meet applicable job-site background, drug screening, and employment verification requirements

OSHA 10 and industry certifications are a plus. Candidates without OSHA 10 may still be considered depending on experience and the requirements of the position.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

This is an opportunity to build a career in a skilled trade where your responsibilities can grow alongside your abilities.

Entry-level technicians will have the opportunity to learn directly from experienced field professionals, while technicians with existing experience can continue developing more advanced installation, testing, troubleshooting, and leadership skills.

As you grow, there may be opportunities to advance into Lead Technician, field leadership, or project-focused roles.

Work Environment

This is a physically active, field-based position performed primarily on commercial construction and installation sites. Candidates should be comfortable:

  • Standing and moving for extended periods
  • Climbing ladders and working from lifts when properly trained
  • Bending, kneeling, crouching, and working in tighter spaces
  • Working above ceilings and in active construction environments
  • Lifting and moving tools, cable, equipment, and materials up to approximately 50 lbs.
  • Working indoors and outdoors depending on the project
  • Traveling to different job sites and occasionally working adjusted schedules based on project needs

Reasonable accommodations may be available for qualified individuals with disabilities.
