Role & responsibilities

• Supervise and coordinate the overall functioning of the Labour Room on a shift and departmental basis.
• Ensure safe and quality nursing care for antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal patients.
• Monitor and coordinate the management of normal and high-risk labour cases.
• Ensure timely assessment, monitoring, and escalation of maternal and fetal complications.
• Ensure proper monitoring of vital signs, fetal heart rate, CTG, labour progress, and other required parameters.
• Coordinate with Obstetricians, Anaesthetists, Neonatologists, and other clinical teams during labour and emergencies.
• Ensure readiness and availability of Labour Room, OT, emergency equipment, medications, instruments, and consumables.
• Supervise and guide nursing staff in conducting normal deliveries and assisting in Caesarean sections and obstetric procedures.
• Ensure strict adherence to infection prevention and control practices, aseptic techniques, and patient safety protocols.
• Ensure accurate and timely documentation of labour records, delivery notes, medication records, monitoring charts, and nursing documentation.
• Ensure proper handover and takeover of patients and critical information between shifts.
• Manage and coordinate obstetric emergencies, including PPH, eclampsia, fetal distress, obstructed labour, and other complications, with timely escalation to the consultant.
• Ensure appropriate preparation and availability of blood and blood products in coordination with the Blood Bank when required.
• Monitor and maintain adequate staffing levels and allocate duties effectively according to patient workload.
• Conduct regular rounds and monitor staff performance, discipline, attendance, and adherence to departmental protocols.
• Train, guide, and mentor nursing staff regarding Labour Room procedures, emergency protocols, infection control, and patient safety.
• Monitor inventory of medicines, emergency drugs, surgical items, instruments, and consumables and ensure timely replenishment.
• Coordinate with NICU/Neonatology teams for newborn resuscitation and management of high-risk neonates.
• Ensure proper cleaning, sterilization, disinfection, and maintenance of Labour Room equipment and areas.
• Monitor departmental quality indicators, incidents, near misses, and compliance with hospital standards.
• Participate in clinical audits, NABH assessments, quality improvement initiatives, and departmental meetings.
• Ensure compliance with hospital SOPs, nursing protocols, statutory requirements, and NABH standards.
• Address patient and attendant concerns related to Labour Room services and escalate issues appropriately.
• Maintain confidentiality of patient information and ensure professional and ethical conduct by the nursing team.

Preferred candidate profile

• B.Sc. Nursing / Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing / GNM from a recognized institution.
• Valid registration with the State Nursing Council / Indian Nursing Council as applicable.
• Minimum 5 years of relevant experience, preferably with experience in Labour Room supervision.
• Strong experience in managing normal and high-risk obstetric cases.
• Good knowledge of labour monitoring, CTG, obstetric emergencies, and delivery room protocols.
• Experience in a tertiary-care or multi-specialty hospital will be preferred.
• Strong leadership, team management, coordination, and decision-making skills.
• Good knowledge of NABH, infection control, patient safety, and nursing documentation standards.
• Ability to work effectively in rotational shifts and emergency situations.
