About The Role The Machine Learning Engineer 5 (Individual Contributor) at Capital One plays a pivotal role in driving the company’s AI and machine learning initiatives. This position is ideal for seasoned professionals passionate about building scalable, high-impact ML solutions that solve complex business challenges. As part of a collaborative and fast-paced environment, you will work closely with cross-functional teams—including data scientists, data engineers, and product managers—to design, develop, and deploy advanced machine learning models and infrastructure. Your expertise will enable Capital One to scale its AI capabilities, optimize decision-making processes, and enhance customer experiences through innovative data-driven solutions.

Qualifications The ideal candidate will possess a strong educational background with at least a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related quantitative field such as Statistics, Economics, or Engineering. Extensive programming experience is required, with a minimum of six years in Python, Java, Golang, or C++. Proven expertise in deploying and operating machine learning models using industry-standard frameworks like PyTorch or TensorFlow, alongside libraries such as Pandas, NumPy, and Scikit-learn, is essential. Candidates should have significant experience working with large-scale distributed systems like Spark or Ray, and cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure, with at least four years of experience managing production ML solutions in cloud environments and utilizing Kubernetes for container orchestration. Preferred qualifications include advanced degrees (Master’s or Doctorate), a track record of industry contributions, and excellent communication skills for articulating complex ML concepts to diverse audiences.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and deploy machine learning models and components that address real-world business problems, collaborating closely with product and data science teams.
• Build and scale multi-tenant platforms capable of supporting large-scale ML model training and serving at enterprise levels.
• Make informed decisions regarding ML infrastructure, including model selection, data and feature engineering, hyperparameter tuning, and addressing issues like bias, variance, and overfitting.
• Write, test, and optimize application code to automate model training, validation, and deployment processes.
• Participate in agile teams to develop software that facilitates advanced big data and ML applications.
• Monitor, maintain, and retrain models in production to ensure optimal performance and accuracy.
• Leverage cloud architectures and technologies to deliver scalable ML solutions, including constructing efficient data pipelines.
• Implement CI/CD practices with automated testing and monitoring to ensure smooth deployment and operation of ML models and applications.
• Ensure code security, compliance, and governance, adhering to best practices in Responsible and Explainable AI.
• Utilize programming languages such as Python, Scala, or Java to develop robust ML systems and infrastructure.
