Are you a skilled Mechanical Maintenance Engineer who enjoys fault finding, problem solving and keeping critical plant running? Castle Environmental is one of the UK's leading hazardous waste treatment, disposal and recycling businesses. With more than 40 years of experience, we process over 200,000 tonnes of hazardous and liquid waste every year across three UK sites, recycling more than 65% of all material received. Our Ilkeston site is home to our East Midlands headquarters, laboratories and treatment operations, running around the clock to support customers across the UK. We're looking for an experienced Mechanical Maintenance Engineer to join our night shift team, helping to keep our plant operating safely, efficiently and reliably throughout the night.
The Role
Working as part of our maintenance team, you will carry out planned preventative maintenance and reactive repairs across a wide range of industrial processing equipment. You'll be responsible for fault finding, diagnosing issues and returning equipment to service safely and efficiently, whilst working independently within your area of expertise. This is a hands-on engineering role suited to someone with strong mechanical maintenance experience gained within industrial, manufacturing, process, recycling or heavy engineering environments.
What You'll Be Doing
- Carrying out planned preventative maintenance in line with the site's maintenance schedule.
- Diagnosing and repairing mechanical faults on pumps, conveyors, tanks, mixers, shredders, pipework and associated plant equipment.
- Responding promptly to breakdowns, prioritising safety, compliance and operational continuity.
- Performing bearing, seal and component replacements on rotating equipment.
- Supporting welding and pipefitting activities where required.
- Maintaining accurate maintenance records using the CMMS system.
- Working to permits, safe systems of work and site LOTOTO procedures.
- Identifying recurring faults and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives.
- Supporting and overseeing contractors on site, ensuring work is completed safely and in line with permits and method statements.
- Working safely and ensuring company health, safety and environmental standards are maintained at all times.
What You'll Need
- Time-served apprenticeship, NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds or equivalent mechanical engineering qualification.
- Mechanical maintenance experience within an industrial, manufacturing, process, recycling or heavy engineering environment.
- Competence in fault finding and repairing mechanical production plant.
- Experience working with pumps, conveyors, rotating equipment, bearings and seals.
- Pipefitting and welding experience or recognised certifications.
- IOSH Working Safely qualification.
- Two to four years' practical experience applying your trade within a similar environment.
- Ability to work independently and recognise when specialist support is required.
- Experience using computerised maintenance management systems (CMMS).
- A proactive, safety-focused approach and strong problem-solving skills.
Desirable Skills
- Experience working on a chemical, hazardous waste, recycling or heavy process site.
- Working at Height and Confined Space qualifications.
- MEWP licence.
- Counterbalance Forklift Truck licence.
- Permit-to-work and LOTOTO experience.
What We Offer
- Permanent, full-time night shift position.
- Competitive salary and night shift allowance.
- Training and qualifications funded and supported.
- A published career progression structure with clear development opportunities.
- The opportunity to work on a wide variety of industrial plant including shredders, conveyors, tankers, reactors, pumps, pipework and process systems.
- A supportive team environment with long-term career prospects.
- A role on a continuously operating site where no two days - or nights - are the same.
