Maintenance Operative

Job Summary
We are seeking a reliable and skilled Maintenance Operative to join our team at a busy and caring nursing home. You will play a key role in ensuring the safety, comfort, and well-being of our residents by maintaining the building, equipment, and grounds to a high standard.

Driving licence and own vehicle is essential (mileage will be paid for work related trips)

Responsibilities

• Key Responsibilities

· Carry out day-to-day maintenance and repair tasks across the home

· Ensure the building and grounds are safe, secure, and well maintained

· Perform basic plumbing, electrical, joinery, and decorating work

· Conduct regular checks of equipment, lighting, heating, and water systems

· Ensure compliance with health & safety regulations and fire safety procedures

· Maintain accurate records of maintenance, repairs, and safety checks

· Carry out routine testing (e.g. fire alarms, emergency lighting, water temperatures)

· Respond promptly to maintenance requests from staff

· Liaise with external contractors when required

· Ensure tools and equipment are kept in good working order

· Support infection control measures, including safe waste disposal

· Assist with room preparation, including minor refurbishments and furniture assembly

· Monitor stock levels of maintenance supplies and report when replenishment is needed

· Participate in audits and inspections as required

Qualifications

· Previous experience in a maintenance or handy person role

· Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrics, and general building maintenance

· Understanding of health & safety regulations

· Good problem-solving skills and attention to detail

· Ability to work independently and manage workload effectively

· Good communication skills and a friendly, approachable manner

Experience working in a care setting (desirable but not essential)

Health & Safety Responsibilities

· Ensure compliance with COSHH regulations

· Carry out risk assessments where necessary

· Ensure all work is completed safely with minimal disruption to residents

· Maintain a safe environment for residents, staff, and visitors at all times
