Maintenance Staff

Help care for a place where people gather, worship, celebrate, and serve.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity is seeking two dependable, hands-on individuals to join our team as Part-Time Maintenance (Sextons). This position is ideal for someone who takes pride in keeping facilities clean, safe, welcoming, and ready for the many activities that take place throughout our church and parish house.

The Sexton – Maintenance team helps care for our buildings and grounds, assists with event setup and special services, and serves as an important part of the day-to-day life of the church.

What You'll Do

Care for Our Facilities

• Monitor the proper operation of heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems, boilers, thermostats, and dehumidifiers.
• Vacuum, dust, and clean designated areas of the church and parish house, including the library, café, seminar room, choir room, and other common spaces.
• Maintain carpets using cleaning equipment as needed.
• Pick up trash and help keep the grounds and parking areas clean.
• Replace light bulbs and handle minor maintenance needs.
• Help keep the sanctuary, pulpit, and choir areas neat and orderly.
• Respond to maintenance requests from the church office.

Prepare for Worship & Events

• Set up and arrange spaces for worship services, meetings, and special events.
• Assist with lighting and A/V setup as needed.
• Help prepare the facilities for weddings, funerals, interments in the Memorial Garden, and other special services.
• Return spaces to a clean and orderly condition following services and events.

Help Keep the Grounds Safe

• Assist with grounds maintenance, including mowing, primarily as a backup when needed.
• Assist with snow removal and clearing walkways during winter weather.
• Help ensure buildings and surrounding areas are safe and ready for use.

Opening & Security

• Unlock, open, and secure church buildings according to the schedule.
• Patrol the parking lot after dark at the conclusion of worship services and meetings.
• Help ensure that facilities are properly secured when activities are completed.

Coordinate Maintenance & Supplies

• Serve as a point of contact for maintenance and service vendors.
• Schedule routine and necessary maintenance and repairs.
• Receive deliveries and notify the church office when supplies need to be reordered.
• Maintain current contact information for contractors and service providers.

Other Support

• Make occasional errands or trips requested by the church office.
• Assist pastors and staff in maintaining a clean, safe, welcoming, and well-maintained environment.
• Perform other related duties as needed.

Previous experience in building maintenance, facilities, custodial work, hospitality, or a related field is helpful. Familiarity with basic tools, cleaning equipment, building systems, or event setup is a plus.

Schedule

This is a part-time position, with two individuals sharing coverage of the church facilities. Weekly hours will be scheduled based on the needs and activities of the church and may vary from week to week.

• Every other Sunday morning is required for opening the church.
• Evening hours may occasionally be required for weddings, funerals, meetings, or other special events.
• Weekend, holiday, and weather-related coverage may occasionally be necessary.
• Grounds maintenance and snow removal responsibilities are primarily as-needed/back-up duties.

Physical Requirements

The position requires the ability to stand for extended periods; walk, stretch, bend, and climb ladders; use hands and fingers to operate tools, telephones, and cleaning equipment; and safely perform routine cleaning and maintenance tasks.
