Maintenance Technician- Cemeteries

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Performs a variety of unskilled or semi-skilled work in the maintenance of municipal cemeteries, recreational facilities, and grounds of municipal buildings.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO, THE FOLLOWING DUTIES. ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS MAY BE IDENTIFIED BY THE CITY AND LISTED AS SUCH IN THE INCUMBENT’S PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL ELEMENTS. VARIOUS TASKS MAY BE ASSIGNED UNDER EACH ESSENTIAL FUNCTION. THOSE THAT ARE LISTED UNDER THE EXAMPLES OF WORK ARE NOT ALL INCLUSIVE; THEY ARE EXAMPLES ONLY AND MAY BE AMENDED OR ADDED TO AS NEEDED BY THE CITY OF MCCOMB.

• Participates in the planting, maintenance, and removal of trees, hedges, shrubs, and the maintenance of outdoor equipment at City Park, recreation areas and municipal buildings;
• Participates in the cutting and maintenance of all City parks;
• Participates in seeding flowers; clipping, rooting, potting, and transferring plans to beds; preparing soil for beds; repotting plants; and a wide variety of similar tasks;
• Participates in weed eating grass at curbs and right of ways;
• Participates in the operation of equipment such as mowers, weed eaters, and tractors;
• Participates in opening and closing cemetery lots;
• Digs trenches, ditches, graves, and backfills, and compacts areas dug; cleans out ditches, loads and unloads materials and equipment;
• Sprays larvicides, puts out ant poison;
• Participates in the cleaning of streets after wrecks.
• Serves as a member of a team that operates the leaf machine and pick up;
• Participates in the installation of Christmas decorations;
• Transports and sets up voting booths for City elections;
• Maintains recycle bins.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

INCUMBMENT PERFORMS OTHER JOB-RELATED TASKS AS ASSIGNED AND REQUIRED; ANY DUTIES/TASKS INCLUDED IN THE EMPLOYEE’S PERFORMANCE EVALUATION ELEMENTS ARE ESSENTIAL TO THAT EMPLOYEE’S POSITION WITHIN THE JOB CLASSIFICATION.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS

• Some knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair activities.
• Skill in operation of some of job-related tools and equipment.
• Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time.
• Ability to work safely.
• Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public.
• Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must maintain a current, valid State driver’s license and CDL certification, or ability to obtain one

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and bees and wasps.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Pay: $14.95 per hour

Expected hours: 40.0 per week
