The technician is responsible for leading corrective actions for recurring or high-impact issues, performing control system modifications when necessary, and collaborating with engineering on system upgrades. In addition to supporting safe equipment operation and uptime, this role mentors junior technicians, ensures quality documentation, and plays a key role in continuous improvement initiatives. A Level 3 Technician is expected to function with minimal supervision and provide leadership in both technical execution and system reliability.

Essential Functions

  • Diagnose and resolve complex electrical and control system issues using PLC software and system schematics.
  • Use a laptop to interface with PLCs and HMIs for fault analysis, minor logic modifications, and I/O verification.
  • Lead troubleshooting efforts for critical or recurring faults across extrusion and support systems.
  • Perform advanced motor and drive diagnostics including tuning, overload analysis, and encoder feedback checks.
  • Plan and execute major equipment maintenance, shutdowns, and upgrades in collaboration with engineering.
  • Maintain and update control system documentation including ladder diagrams and wiring prints.
  • Mentor and train Level 1 and 2 technicians in troubleshooting methodology and safe work practices.
  • Lead root cause investigations and recommend improvements to enhance equipment reliability.

Job Competencies

  • Advanced Troubleshooting: Independently diagnoses system-level issues, including PLC, VFD, and sensor logic.
  • Control Systems Expertise: Comfortable working within Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar automation platforms.
  • Leadership: Leads by example in safety, documentation, and troubleshooting standards.
  • Analytical Thinking: Applies logic to resolve complex problems and prevent repeat failures.
  • Planning & Coordination: Prepares tools, parts, and personnel for planned maintenance and improvement projects.
  • Mentorship & Training: Supports development of junior technicians through on-the-job instruction.
  • Documentation & Systems: Maintains detailed logs, diagrams, and control backups as part of CMMS or reliability programs.
  • Communication proficiency.
  • Professional, fair, balanced people skills.
  • Skilled Welder (MIG, TIG, Aluminum) able to read and operate from blueprints.

Physical Demands
This role requires regular standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in confined or elevated spaces. Technicians must be able to safely lift and carry items up to 100 pounds, use hand and power tools in tight areas, and visually inspect small electrical components. The position involves frequent exposure to industrial noise, heat, and moving equipment, and may require working at heights. Proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory.

Work Environment
This position works in a manufacturing/warehouse setting, with some outdoor exposure during the workday. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high. Proper PPE will be administered. Employees will be frequently exposed to mechanical parts and vibration.

  • Minimum of 5 years experience in maintenance roles, with proven skill in advanced troubleshooting
