What they need
Position Summary
The Manager of Agrivoltaics provides strategic leadership, development support, education, and operational oversight for all agrivoltaic activities associated with Doral’s solar energy projects.
This position serves as the primary connection between solar development, agriculture, livestock grazing, landowners, local communities, growers, grazers, contractors, and project management teams.
The Manager is responsible for developing agrivoltaic programs from the earliest stages of project development through construction and long-term operations. This includes supporting land acquisition, community engagement, site engineering, public relations, agricultural planning, grazing programs, grower development, education, certification, mentorship, and apprenticeship programs.
The Manager will oversee all agrivoltaic activities both inside and outside the solar project fence, ensuring that agricultural production and solar energy development work together successfully.
A major responsibility of this position will be the development and management of the Agrivoltaics Education Block at Mammoth North, creating a working demonstration and training environment for current and future growers and grazers.
Key Responsibilities
1. Development Team Support
The Manager of Agrivoltaics will work closely with the development team during the planning and development of solar projects.
Land Acquisition and Landowner Relations
- Assist the development and land teams with agricultural considerations during land acquisition and site evaluation.
- Evaluate existing agricultural operations, soils, livestock opportunities, cropping systems, drainage, fencing, water availability, and other agricultural resources.
- Meet with landowners to understand existing agricultural practices and identify opportunities to maintain or introduce agricultural production alongside solar development.
- Help communicate the long-term agricultural vision of agrivoltaic projects to landowners.
- Identify potential growers and grazers who may participate in future projects.
- Help develop agricultural transition plans for properties entering solar development.
Community Meetings
Participate in public meetings, landowner meetings, county meetings, community forums, and other stakeholder gatherings.
Explain how agrivoltaics can allow energy production and agriculture to coexist on the same land.
Present plans for sheep grazing, crop production, pollinator habitat, agricultural education, and other compatible agricultural activities.
Address community questions and concerns regarding the agricultural use of solar facilities.
Build relationships with farmers, livestock producers, agricultural organizations, schools, universities, Extension programs, conservation organizations, and community leaders.
Site Engineering
Work with engineering, construction, agricultural, and operations teams to ensure that projects are designed to support long-term agricultural use. Agricultural design considerations may include:
Livestock fencing and gates
Grazing paddocks
Livestock movement corridors
Water systems
Handling facilities
Shade and shelter
Equipment access
Vegetation establishment
Seeding plans
Soil protection
Drainage
Agricultural access roads
Crop-production areas
Pollinator habitat
Agricultural areas outside the project fence
Safe interaction between livestock, agricultural equipment, and solar infrastructure
The Manager should provide agricultural input before construction whenever possible, helping ensure that agrivoltaics is incorporated into project design rather than added after the project has been built.
Public Relations
Serve as an agricultural representative and spokesperson for the organization’s agrivoltaics program. Responsibilities may include:
- Community presentations
- Agricultural tours
- Landowner meetings
- Industry conferences
- School and university programs
- Media interviews
- Agricultural demonstrations
- Government and regulatory meetings
- Farmer and livestock producer outreach
The Manager will help communicate the benefits of combining agriculture, renewable energy, land stewardship, and rural economic development.
2. Educational Duties
Education will be a major responsibility of the Manager of Agrivoltaics. The Manager will develop programs that prepare farmers, livestock producers, and future agricultural professionals to successfully operate within agrivoltaic environments.
Grazer Training
Develop and oversee training for livestock producers who will graze solar facilities. Training should include:
Solar-site safety
Livestock handling and husbandry
Rotational and managed grazing
Stocking-rate management
Forage identification
Forage establishment
Animal nutrition
Water management
Temporary and permanent fencing
Predator management
Animal-health expectations
Biosecurity
Vegetation management
Record keeping
Emergency procedures
Working around electrical and solar infrastructure
Communication with solar-site operations personnel
The goal is to create professional grazers who understand both livestock production and the operational requirements of utility-scale solar facilities.
3. Agrivoltaic Certification Program
Develop and administer an Agrivoltaic Grazer Certification Program. The certification program should establish minimum standards for individuals and businesses working on solar facilities.
Classroom instruction
Field instruction
Solar-site safety
Livestock management
Vegetation management
Equipment training
Agricultural best-management practices
Environmental stewardship
Documentation and reporting
Emergency response
Final competency evaluation
The Manager will work toward creating a consistent standard that allows project managers to confidently identify trained and qualified agrivoltaic growers and grazers.
4. Mentorship and Apprenticeship Program
Develop a structured mentorship and apprenticeship program for future grazers and growers. The program should provide opportunities for new producers to work alongside experienced agricultural operators.
Livestock production
Grazing management
Solar-site operations
Vegetation management
Fencing
Water systems
Animal handling
Business management
Contract grazing
Agricultural record keeping
Equipment management
Working with solar operations teams
The long-term objective is to create a pipeline of qualified growers and grazers capable of supporting the continued expansion of agrivoltaics.
